Im pretty much down to the last 2 accessories on my new 08 FJRa. Ill pick up my mounts from techmount. GPS will be a Zumo 550 mounted on the steering stem. The Radar detector will be mounted on the left bar. Im just not sure which radar detector to buy. Id like to pick up a good one, and Im thinking Ill probably spend $200 to $300 on it. Any input would be appreciated on this. My only other question is on helmate speakers. I saw a guy had Koss Pro 35 and put them inside. Ive got a Joe Rocket helmate by HJC. Ill also need to figure out how to power them, maybe an adapter with 2 plugs in the power outlet in the little storage on the left. Thanks for any help here.

two words--- Vanentine One The best radar detector there is, but it is not cheap. AS for helmet speakers, I would suggest that you forget them and go for some custom molded ear plugs with speakers in them (ear buds, if you will) I used to run helmet speakers and run my volume at 100% to hear, went to ear phones and now run my volume at 3-4, and they block the wind noise and protect my hearing. These options are going to cost you more up front, but you will be money ahead as you will be getting it right the first time, trust me, I know.

I run a Passport 8500 detector. I don't expect it to save me, I expect it to warn me "they" are out there and it has....a number of times....IMO, saved me the cost of the detector at least 3X the cost...

If your set-up (or skill level) allows you to use the custom made earplugs, that is the best solution. I run my sound through an Autocom unit for my "extras" and my 2-way radio, so it was much simpler for me to run 1 plug-in cable to my helmet for the mike and earphones.

Like OhioFJR has said, because of the earplugs needed when I run my short Summer windshield, I have to turn the sound up to 80%-100% to hear my XM radio and my Kenwood 2-way.

Call Powerlet and talk with Alan. He can make you a custom plug that will power up to 3 low voltage devices. Such as my iPod, Escort 8500 and future Zumo 550.

For power, after doing it wrong the first time, I realized that the best way is to power the radar detector through a switched source and the GPS through an unswitched source. I used the 'spare' horn power lead for my radar detector and wired the GPS directly to the battery. I have an inline fuse in all of my accessories.

I have an Escort 8500 that is mounted on the right side only because the face of the unit is angled slightly, probably because in a car the detector is located mostly to the right of the driver. I'm not sure if this actually makes a huge difference but it might be something you consider when you purchase a detector.

I second the V1 (because I've had one for many years) but remember that you will also need the remote audio adapter if you plan on using any type of helmet speaker (or ear buds). That ups the ante by about $50 bucks.
