Tonite went outside saw this cool look'n moon, was behind some thin clouds giving it a red glow just over some hills in the distance.

I read somewhere that the moon rotates only once each time it journeys around the earth, so that we always see exactly the same view of it's nearest side. Anybody know about that one?

The Moon is in synchronous rotation, meaning that it keeps the same face turned toward the Earth at all times. This synchronous rotation is only true on average, because the Moon's orbit has a definite eccentricity. As a result, the angular velocity of the Moon varies as it moves around the Earth, and is hence not always equal to the Moon's rotational velocity. When the Moon is at its perigee, its rotation is slower than its orbital motion, and this allows us to see up to eight degrees of longitude of its eastern (right) far side. Conversely, when the Moon reaches its apogee, its rotation is faster than its orbital motion and this reveals eight degrees of longitude of its western (left) far side. This is referred to as longitudinal libration.

Thanks (both of you) for the photos of our moon.

A couple weeks ago, when the moon wasn't reflecting so much light in the early evening sky, I did my annual January Jupiter Moons watch.

Starting the new year looking at the Winter sky and remembering Galileo's discovery of the four largest moons of Jupiter is one of my favorite "holiday traditions".

It also reminds me that I'm getting older and my eyes are getting weaker...

My inadequate telescope doesn't help.

Whew! For a minute I had reservations about opening this...

I figured for certain it was going to be the infamous Beemerdons moon over Copper Canyon.

Some pics I took of the October 27, 2004 Full Lunar Eclipse with a Sony Dsc-W1 Through a Meade ETX60 with a Schedule 80 NMT home made camera adapter.
