My 11 year old has been hounding me for an Xbox. She only wants it for 2 games not avail on a PC. So its kinda expensive just to get 2 games. BUT, I made a deal with her. Straight As ALL YEAR will get her one. Well, she completed the 5th grade with, you guessed it Straight As. I shouldn't be surprised as she has only made MAYBE 5 Bs her whole life. My wife says I am wrong to offer bribes, but I figure If I can instill good habits early, it'll payoff later with (hopefully) a scholarship.

Is a $450 bribe to much for a year of straight As?

Anybody got a 360 for sale cheap?

I don't see it as a bribe at all.

No different than -- say -- get Straight A's in High School - get a Free College (scholorships that is)

I'd have purchased the games after the first all A report card.... and let her have the game cartridges but not the XBOX until the year ended with all A's.

EDIT: XBox Cube at erwin comp: $297 Clicky

After raising 4 kids, Any carrot you can dangle in front of the donkey to keep motivation in a positive direction is a good thing. The trouble is not running out of carrots.

Payment for services recieved! the only problem is that now you will have to pay her to get off the damn thing and get a life; its like the black spidy suit!

FjrFencer, she would have probably gotten straight "A"s without the incentive. I bet she didn't think much about the incentive after it was offered anyway. What you are going to do in holding up your end of the bargain is to be able to say that you knew she would have gotten straight "A's without the incentive, but you wanted to offer her the incentive anyway. Then sit down with her, play the two games WITH her and that will make all the difference. All the difference!

just think of the trinkets her husband will have to offer her for maritial intimacies she should perform anyhow...

No, not at all. I'd be thrilled if $450 would produce a 3.5 (half A's, half B's) from my son.

The kicker is, you may find this particular bribe hurts her grades if she gets addicted to it and is still using it when she's in 6th grade. My son has had to turn his in for several extended stints 'cause his grades were not up to snuff partly due to the fact that he'd rather play Xbox than do his homework. It may not be so bad for a girl, but for a boy, playing Halo with his friends is a bit like smoking crack. I had to configure your router to block the relevant ports after 11:00pm..;-)

I am a *** craved *******, but this post really hit me wrong. YOU DID READ SHE IS 11 !!!!!RIGHT PLEASE TELL ME YOU OVERLOOKED THAT. HOW THE HELL DOES *** AND MARITAL INTIMACIES COME TO MIND WHEN DISCUSSING AN 11 YEAR OLD!!!???

To every one else, Thanks, and yes she prob would have made them any way, but we did have to kick her in the butt a few times as home-work was slipping. This carrot can't be any worse than the PC. She likes a game called Runescape for online gaming and she lost that carrot once or twice for fighting with her sisters.

yep, read it all...

at 11 y/o she is learning that even tho she can get straight a's by studying, if she holds out, the man in her life will buy her things...

so.... i was considering the impact down the road...

and... i said 'husband' and 'maritial'...

i... thought that respectful of values and mores...

not... sorry for responding to your open forum post...

That is not a bribe, it's a contingency. For it to be a bribe, there must already be a challenging behavior occurring, which you are trying to get to stop. For instance..

Child screaming and crying because she want's an XBOX. Parent says, "O.k., just calm down and we can get one."

Child drops to floor at the candy isle. Parent gives the kid a candy bar and says next time you need to behave.

Child jumping up and down on the couch. Parent says "I'll let you play XBOX if you get off that couch."

The world goes around on contingencies, and there is nothing wrong with them.

You go to work you get a paycheck. Is work bribing you to come???

If you eat your meat you can have your pudding. (How can you have your pudding, if you don't eat your meat?) ;)

Also, I very highly doubt the only reason she got A's is for the XBOX. I'm sure you also praise her for doing a great job and brag about her to friends!

I'd say she earned it. Pay up Dad!

I used to pay my kids for good grades on a graduated scale. So much for an A, B, nothing for a C and D's & F's might find them owing me a little.

Worked with my daughters. Not so much with my son.
