Ouch! 8 ribs is a lot of pain, but it is temporary. Glad you're posting.

Stay off the bikes until you can take a deep breathe without it causing much pain. If you ribs pop and crackle they are not healed back together yet. Take you time and relax as much as you can between slow walks.

I still have quite a bit of crackling going on but I think I am down to just 2 or 3 spots; hopefully they will go away soon! I have to start thinking about which bike I am going to get next, the insurance company totaled mine so its new bike time!!

Oh where to start; I'm OK! I had all my gear on. I am pretty sure I am in as good a shape as I am because of it but I hurt like a mo-fo. I am running low on pain drugs, which scares me about as much as talking to my insurance company.
So I went to SE OH this past Wednesday, it was beautiful. Roads were clean and dry. I was on US 78 headed West and nearing the miners museum (the one with the big huge drag line shovel. It was about 1:30pm, low 70's. My buddy **** and I were cruising at maybe 50 MPH and I was about 50 yards ahead of **** (so you know we were going slow). A gentle breeze came up and blew what must have been millions of of beetles out of the trees and over the road. I wont go so far as to say it was freaky but it was definitely attention getting.

At any rate, that was when I stopped paying attention to the road, must have been for only a split second. Unfortunately it was right at the entrance of a right hander. I managed to break at the entrance where I should have leaned. I would say I target fixated but not at this point; I was still looking above the road and for some strange reason I simply could not get my eyes were they belonged. about the time I crossed the yellow line I had my eyes down and I could see my trajectory was into a grass field essentially unobstructed given that I still had no lean on the bike I calmly decided to just head into the grass and turn around. at this point I was fixated on the grass and knew I was going in. I never really had a sense of speed until it was all over, but I left the road doing maybe 20 mph.

Unfortunately, there was the obligatory large hidden bump which essentially stopped the front tire's forward movement and sent the bike vertical and me through the screen. I have no idea how high I was but I am pretty sure I left the ground immediately upon hitting the grass and I came to a rest about 20 feet from there. I had a single impact on my left shoulder. The bike apparently landed on the left front cowling. This compressed the front of the bike in and over to the right. I am also concerned that the forks took a big hit and are not right. I am sure the adjuster will tell me they are fine.

But enough about the bike. I hear the crunch of impact quite well and it took a few minutes of going over the basics of post accident before I was confident to take my helmet off and get up. I would have stayed on the ground but given that we were in BFE I was more concerned with getting out of there. after a few minutes some people came by and assisted. a few minutes later a cop then a few minutes after that the meat wagon. They got me in then checked my body out. I told them that my ribs hurt and they tested them for fractures and said that they probably weren't broken and had they been I probably wouldn't have been up and walking around. But I elected to take the wagon to the hospital and that turned out to be a wise choice. I was starting to observe some visual distortions which made me think I had a concussion.

the paramedics strapped me to a back board which was utterly excruciating but what can you do; 25 miles to the nearest hospital. CT scan came back with 8 broke ribs on the left side and a partially collapsed lung. The lung was good enough that they did not try to re inflate it so no tubes thankfully.

Well its nap time. Any good advice on how to sleep with broken ribs?

Oh and PS, anyone who tells you laughing with broken ribs is the most painful experience ever, obviously did not get switched to Dilaudid which has the wonderful side effect of causing extreme nausea and vomiting. Needless to say I aim to have words with the doctor about that choice!
Damn, good thing it's only the ribs... Can't tell you which side is best to sleep on, try the side wlith the good ribs, I can say watch out for sneezing, hell that can break more.

BTDT: late night P.A. on duty said, "We're gonna have to stick this collapsed-lung suction-hose in-between a couple of those broken ribs." I reply,"I hope you've got plenty of drugs to give me, Doc?" He says, "I'll give you all I can -- but, it won't be enough."

I was able to do alot of stuff -- ride (carefully) even, in a month. So, things will hopefully progress well for you and you'll soon be riding your new bike and all this will be but a memory.

(but, you may not be able to forget for quite a while...)

Good Luck

"it wont be enough" isnt that an understatement! The first night or two was a real drag but I feel like I am healing up quite nicely! The intensity of the pain has decreased though at times (like coughing) it can be as bad as it gets.

But yes you will definately see me on a bike again! I am too stupid to stop now! Hell its only a flesh wound! :)

Super Squidly!

I am thinking that I will stay with Japanese unless Valention Rossi switches to Duke's! haha
I suppose my advice is too late to be of any use, but stool softeners are a help in reducing the inevitable constipation (and grunting-induced pain) that follow broken ribs and pain meds. Also, narcotic induced nausea is quite drug-specific and might not be a problem with another drug; or, almost certainly, with Toradol (which might be adequate by now)

Best of luck getting up-to-speed soon

By the way, it is possible to drink enough brandy to not feel the pain of three broken ribs. But the hangover the next day was a trauma worse than the three boken bones!

Kevin,

Sorry to hear about the spill, I had 5 broken ribs and a collar bone last year (feel your pain) from my accident. No puking here but I think the worse was sneezing. Since I had the broken collar bone with ribs, my wife had to help me out of bed. I would be at a 45 degree angle and she would support my back and and help me up. Would bring tears to my eye every time. Good news though I had a new bike in 4 weeks and riding again in 5.

Take your time heal up

Good advice indeed. I rarely have that issue and laughed at the doctor when he tried to give me a scrip for that; I should have taken it. But it didnt get me too bad because I eat right and am in good shape, so I had to do some work but it didnt hurt :)

The good news is that I slept in my bed for the first time last night (took 11 days). I was elevated but I was able to get out of bed with no problem. The doctors were really amazed that my sholder didnt break; i attribute it to being in good shape and having hardened armor leathers on.

Kevin, sorry to hear about your spill. Let me share this - a few years ago my buddy and I were practicing wheelies on his farm in KY on a Saturday afternoon. I landed with the front wheel turned and I highsided, landing hard on my left arm/left side. My buddy said "That thing tossed you like a big sack of poop!". Pleased with that, he repeated it! After the groaning subsided and I got my wind back, he helped me up and got me back on the bike so I could make the 15 mile ride home - and get off his farm, LOL. I suffered through Sunday and work on Monday, then my wife convinced me to go to the hospital after work. Found 6 broken ribs, got some meds, back to work Tues. He liked telling the story at work, and I got to hear about why motorcycles have two wheels.

Here is a tip, the meds make you feel better, but it doesn't mean you ARE better. I reinjured myself thinking I was OK, so I tried to install a Class IV hitch on my F-150. Mistake - felt that gross ripping/tearing sensation. Then I was cutting the grass on the riding lawnmower - what can happen there? Well, I got stuck in the ditch and was agitated and dumb enough to think lifting it to get it unstuck was a good idea. Mistake, same thing. Healing prolly took 2X as long thanks to the painkillers and my poor judgment, but I hate being housebound!

Hope your healing goes well.

Eric

Like my pappy always said "Take it like a man son, take like a man!" Yes I feel the sense that I could start doing more physically intense things, but stories like this keep me in check: Thanks!

Kevin,

I don't know how this thread got by me on the 26th.

Wondered what happened when you posted about getting the new R-1.

Wow, sorry Gladly to hear about you just having cracked ribs. That started reading quite rough at first.

Well, it's obvious the healing process is taking place and you have been getting some good advice.

Keep the healing going...

Kevin,

I don't know how I missed this thread, sorry to hear of your off road adventure. get better soon.

He is probably hangin out at the more liberal R1 forum these days.

Maybe he was but I didnt see him there :)

Feeling pretty good. Taking the pain meds only in the evenings. There was a killer price on new 2008 CBR1000RR's ($6900 OTD) in Arkansas but my wife had a pissfit when I said **** and I were headed there with a trailer. So maybe there will be a good deal on the R1 when she finally settles down

Hi Kevin,

Sorry to hear about your get-off.

Happy to hear that you didn't get hurt to badly and that you are healing up well. Having 8 busted ribs had to hurt like hell.

Good luck on your next bike - 6900otd on that CBR1000 is a heck of a deal.
