Salt Lake City... why?
Well, I said it in the title... looking at dual-sport bikes. I used to ride MX looong time ago, miss it, but don't need the physical abuse, so I am thinking about at least riding trail. I run trails, I hike trails, and I love being away. Speed isn't so much the issue here, but power and stability and being able to get my sorry *** back from where I go, so... reliability. Getting there is no problem in Utah, it's everywhere! But I want to ride there, play there, come home. no trailers involved. I know the KLR has a big tank, maybe 200-240 miles-worth, That's more than enough for what and where I have in mind.

Anyone want to throw in some pros/cons/suggestions. Anyone selling an 05-08?

Thanks, all,

Chris

I just left the KLR world. I know tons of guys use them for off road adventures but I just didn't see it. I've owned and ridden a ton of off road bikes and the KLR is a pig on the dirt. It's so top heavy with the 6.1 gallon tank and the stock suspension is a joke. Unless you want to re-shock the rear and add progressive springs to the front then maybe you'll be happy....that's a big maybe. I had fun on mine in and around town as far as it being a hooligan mobile but a wheelie king or a HWY bike it is not with the stock gearing. If you add a 14 tooth sprocket on the front you might achieve wheelieness.

I installed a set of Kenda 761's which worked great on the street, did the KLX650 needle mod with a Uni filter and some air box mods and yet a friend of mine on a new stock '08 would outrun my '01.

On the HWY with stock gearing at 70-80mph the motor is turning well over 5k. My friend with the '08 installed a 16 tooth on the front since his is mainly a commuter. That made a world of difference on the HWY and dropped the HWY RPM's by 500rpms but killed the bottom end, especially with my 230# butt on it. No more 1st gear power wheelies, even with his 140# butt on there he has to clutch the crap out of it in 1st to come up.

If the KLR is what you are truly interested in I would settle for nothing less than an '08 but good luck finding a new one as they are pretty much sold out every where. There is a WORLD of difference in road manners between the '08 and the previous years. The '08 rules by all means.

In '08 Kawa lowered the travel which IMO sucks worse offroad. I would hate to drop an '08 with the newer huge *** fairing that's on it unless outfitted with full crash bars. They still have that one mechanical weak link in the engine that is better known in the KLR world as "The Doohickey" which is the balancer tension adjuster and if it fails it can cause catastrophic engine failure. I replaced mine on the '01 with a Eagle Mike DooHickey.

Another thing to be leary about is the '08's are known to be oil burners. If you were to buy a used one I would be nervous about how it was broken in but Shnitz racing offers a 685 and 705 kits that would eliminate that problem.

For the type of riding you are describing that you want to do I would suggest the Honda XLR650, no where near as comfortable as a KLR on long hauls but way out performs the KLR on the dirt. Maybe even look at the Suzuki DR's.

In the end the KLR wasn't what I was looking for in a dual sport. Not enough power, crappy suspension, 20+ year old technology on the engine, bar vibs like a mofo and a few other issues.

If I ventured into to Dual Sport world again it would nothing short of a BMW GS1100.

Just my $.02

Chris,

KLR's are fine just don't try to get on a freeway and keep up, that is unless you get blown off the road since it weighs so little.

I am biased here as I am now on my 2nd SUZUKI DL1000 and it does it all and freeway work.

If money is tight get the DL650 or affectionately known as the girls Version....

My buddy has his KLR but it is no more Bullet Proof than my V-Strom.

Lotsa VStroms are now hitting more than 100,000 miles with little more than oil changes and tires..

Would you take a V-strom on trails? I wouldn't.

Here's a couple links if you haven't already found them in your quest for knowledge....

KLR650.net .......be careful posting here the site owner is a complete Nazi. I got temp banned for asking why so many '08's are oil burners.

KLRWorld.com .... much more user friendly and seems to have better tech

KLR650 FAQ .... good general database, not exactly 100% up to date but still good

GF has a DR 650 with stock tires, exhaust and, suspension this thing is a dawg too. Then again I am comparing to my WR 450. NOW, if you live in a state that allows you to dual sport this bike, it is the one for you. The DR would need a pipe, jet mod, airbox mod and several other things to even compete with the WR. You can get a bigger tank for the WR and it won't even know you did it.

go to thumpertalk.com. They have the scoop on all these bikes.

Wow, slam the Wee. The DL650 has gained ownership in huge amounts over the last 3 years. It ain't no dirt bike but is way more road worthy than the KLR. The motor is bullet proof as is the bike in general. Check the Wee rides from South America to Alaska two up. Not much more you could ask for in a work mule.

Oh another note about the KLR, there's not really any ponies left at all to pull from the KLR motor. So if you got one unless you just wanted louder exhaust I wouldn't waste the money like I did on a Supertrap IDSII. The KLX needle did give it a little more response but that was about it.

Would you take a V-strom on trails? I wouldn't.

I/WE do take VStroms on Trails.. Don't take my word for it, check out the many Vstrom forum boards or AdventureRider.com for pics of Vstroms on the trail and water crossings..

Been there, done that and looked at that. More like fire roads and hard pack stuff, I've yet to see any single tracking on a V.

The original posters comments lead me to believe he wants more adventurous riding abilities if he feels the need. The V wouldn't fit that bill, just like the Ulysses X is billed as Buell's dual sport but there's noway after riding one would I take one on anything other than hard packed dirt roads.

Three letters for you KTM....

Three letters for you KTM....
While I completely agree with you the KTM does have a couple of down falls. Very short service intervals, getting parts can be a night mare, very poor fuel economy, also with poor ergos for any road distance.

Other than that they run like ***** apes on steroids.

I had an '05 525 SMR, man did I have fun on that thing. It had hooligan written all over it.

I have one, and submit the following for consideration:

Yes, there are a selection of bikes that are better in all areas of performance, but in all reality, the usage you've described is well within the KLR's considerable bag of tricks.

I just got home from a week on the road with the FJR, and found myself wishing that I had ridden the KLR to explore some new places. Still glad I took the FJR, what with all the high speeds and whatnot, but even so.....

I commute with the KLR nearly daily, and will be taking a week's worth of time on it in September.

It really is everything I had hoped for, because I didn't hope for a supercrosser/cruiser/showbike/racer. Just a great/rideable/fun/reliable/cheap bike that I'm totally comfortable on for my size, 6'4", 250'ish.

Corbin flat seat, shock and fork upgrades, luggage are definite must-have's, IMO.

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...c=30373&hl= Chris, you posed this request: "Speed isn't so much the issue here, but power and stability and being able to get my sorry *** back from where I go, so...reliability." KLR is perfect!

When you open the link above you'll see my KLR at first Rio Urique bridge on the way to Batopilas at the bottom of Mexico's Copper Canyon. KLR and I have ridden the Moab Wilderness south of your home in Salt Lake City. My KLR and I've also ridden the Baja from top to bottom and side to side. Her nickname is "Mi Mexico Mule II." Can leave for Alaska right now!!!

I certainly agree with Mike P on the BMW R1100GS: I OWN ONE! A 1996 named "Mi Mexico Mule." And she has taken me all the way to Guatemala and did so faithfully. But I guarantee you she will not carry me through sand like the KLR does!

I do agree with Feejer/Weejer man: Suzuki V-Strom's are fantastic machines in both of their versions. As is the WR 450.

What I don't understand are the comments about highway usage. My 2006 Kawi KLR has 7,800 miles on her and has never, ever been on a trailer. If I'm going to the Yukon, I go up Hwy 15 past tu casa and then on the Alcan to Whitehorse.

Where I start my off road work in Mexico it's 300 miles on I-10 & I-19 freeways & then 300 on MEX 15-D Autopista Cuota.

I am good friends with Dr. Gregory Frazier through my 40 year connection to BMW's and BMWMOA and long GS ownership.

Pick up his 160 minute video "The Achievable Dream: How to Ride Around the World." All done on a KLR 650 just like mine!

The only reason I am selling my KLR for $3,500 to an FJR Forum member only, is because my BMW F800GS is finally arriving at BMW of Scottsdale in October. If you want to fly to Phoenix to check MMM-II, we can ride Apache Trail together.

https://www.freewebs.com/azairheads/pix/AZBKino/index.htm Chris, here are more pictures of "Mi Mexico Mule II" in the State of Sonora. Kept up with the GS's you see in the pictures just fine and flat ran away from them on the sandy beaches.

Shane made a really great point, as I am just about his size. I'm 6'1" and also 250 pounds. The KLR fits us really big guys!

artistonFJR: After looking at my slides above again, I remembered something else that a KLR does wonderfully. Tows GW's!

When you get to a picture with the caption reading "The Mighty and the Mini! Guess which one ran flawlessly?" The story is that this blue Gold Wing in my photo broke down with an electrical problem in Nuevo (New) Kino and we were staying 10 kilometers South on beach road in Viejo (Old) Kino. I towed Brian and Melanie on their GW via my KLR 650 with a rope!!!!!

I picked up an '87 (first year) in mint condition for $1250 last year, with 8,900 miles. The PO had taken it to the shop for a full service, then traded it in on a KTM, so it ran like the proverbial sewing machine.

I'm an old dirtbike guy from way back, and while it is a big, heavy pig - if you're a decent rider it can go places that would surprise you. I liked it for it's comfort, range, and stout build for hauling gear. I did spend a fair amount of time addressing some weaknesses, and had enough faith to take it to Baja in February.....though it's probably happier in Copper Canyon or exploring the Rockies, than in a Baja rock garden.

I sold it and picked up a '92 XR600 that I restored to full desert/dualsport readiness, but the KLR was pretty cool. They're cheap to buy, and hold that modest value well - so you never have a huge investment and don't stand to lose much.
