was a rush, though knew right away I wasn't up to being a tailhook pilot...I like lotsa runway...

Interesting to me about the Hornets is the pilot does NOT touch the stick until well away from the bow of the carrier

That was way COOL!!! :yahoo:

I had the opportunity some years back to go on a Dependants Day Cruise on the USS Kittyhawk out of San Diego, CA. They took us out to sea just south west of San Clemente Island and did Flight Operations for all to see. Toured much of the ship, they had both the hanger decks down below set up, one for food and sitting down at tables to feed everyone, the other was set up for kids and family fun, Bounce house, etc. Got to even ride up and down the aircraft elevator on the side of the ship.

We're on the deck next to the Super Structure not far from where the planes were being trapped. The only thing separating us from doom was a set of tugs lining the deck. I was maybe 25 -30 feet from F/A-18's and EA-6B Prowlers taking off with full after burners, and slamming onto the deck trying to hook one of the four cables (they actually know which ones they are shooting for when landing).

Sat for a while down on the hanger deck and watched the dolphins swim/surf the boats bow wave. They even cranked the ship in a U-turn, I could see the trail of the ship's wake and our turn was impressively tight. Fun stuff.

On the way back to port, all the planes were gone and I was just standing on the bow of the ship, right at the edge just taking in the breeze and sunset. It was an awesome time.

I got some great video of it. It's a day I'll never forget. :yahoo:

Gee Patriot, maybe using this aircraft would have made you feel better about that

Look Ma, NO HOOK

Funny how many guys have their own dieo cameras nowadays. It once was a HUGE deal.

I just forwarded the F-18 video to make the point to my 19 year old that this guy TURNS HIS HEAD before maneuvers, the way he's supposed to!!!

off of water and land... I know enough about control surfaces and glide rate, air speed.... would love a chance to fly one of these.......
