This never works, but I'm hopelessly optimistic. So here goes....

We got three days. Fang's out much of the time. It's California. We got us some roads. We got us some sun. We got us some motorcycles. We got us some time....

So, who wants to go?

Jb

Hmmmm, lunch in Morro Bay? Say, Sunday? I could talk myself into wiggling my way there via Hwy 58...
I must admit that, as vice president of the CBA, that isn't the first ride that came to mind. But intriguing.... I'd need a local to ride down and up with. Anyone? Anyone? (Not committing yet: exploring options....)

Jb

Morro Bay is a bit out of range for my 2 fiddy. Hell, Santa Cruz is almost outta range :bleh: 200 is about all I can do in the 2 fiddy. FJR's in the shop for at least another 2 weeks. :blinksmiley:

Saving my rubber for next weekends Yo YO semite run and the Cal 24 the following weekend and Tourbo Daves Border to Boarder a couple of weeks after that.

June is turning out to be a busy month.

Hey Hans,

I figure I can lead so you can holler at me -- too fast, too slow, WTF were you thinking back there!? combined with whatever epithet works for you -- this time. My version of Fang (Stinger?, Claw?, Hm, methinks "Cold Feet wielded with malice in bed during winter" :shok: may actually be her favored weapon) says she's bombing up to Reno tomorrow to see her clan AND I DON'T HAVE TO GO - WOOT!!

Got a direction in mind? Got any specific roads in mind? I'm leaning towards coastal (north or south), which works well with your CBA cert. or East to altitude since it's gonna be fairly hot (mid-80s - mid-90s) over my way. Plan on speeds no greater than 10 over (but sure as hell NOT 20 under :thumbsdownsmileyanim: ) posted limits since the roads are gonna be full of tourons (tourist/morons) and LEOs pretty much everywhere...

Let me know,

Okay, we just got ourselves a "critical mass" of interest, meaning you and me. That's all it takes; now others can tag along.

I guess I'm open to a lot of options. I looked you up on the map, and there's no obvious best middle ground that I can think of. There's the roads around Lake Berryessa, but on Memorial Weekend we'd be boxed in by trucks hauling boats.

I've been wanting to go up to Calaveras Big Trees ('course the tourons will be in force up there too), and I suppose would be willing to head up to the Gold Country even though I'll be heading up there next weekend.

Maybe we meet in Stockton, then head east into the foothills, loop up around north, dumping you out toward home and I head south on 80 at day's end. But I am not familiar with the roads up there, so cannot recommend off the top of my head. But I'm open.

TWN, I think SLO is out, but I'm looking forward to meeting you and the others over beer and BBQ on the 1st.

P.S. We're talkin' Sunday, right? I promised Fang some honey time tomorrow, and I like to hang around the house Monday to putter before having to go back to work.

Jb,

Sunday will work - usually hate Sunday traffic, but hopefully the worst of it will be postponed to Monday by the holiday.

A few reasons to go coastal: 1) Sun will be at my back both ways, but in your face both ways if you come East, and in both our faces for more of the ride 2) You're headed east the next weekend, 3) COOLER at the coast - although East works if we go all the way to the fun roads at cooler altitudes, and of course 4) no CBA worries if I come to you as I have no political aspirations...

Since you just posted about Skaggs Spring Road, I'm guessing you don't want to bomb North on Hwy 1 again so soon?

Do you know anything about the roads in San Mateo County? A few roads west of Redwood City headed south towards Santa Cruz look like they have potential (Hwys 35, 84, 9, and 236 plus a couple of secondary roads - Why does Hwy 1 look so straight through there??) or East out of San Jose on Hwy 130 to San Antonio/ Del Puerto to Patterson. That'd put us an hour or so from Hwy 25 (Hollister), but back into hot weather. Come to think of it, Highlander had to get those skills somewere - there's gotta be good riding around Santa Cruz...

OTOH, Back to your original suggestion: Hwy 108 East of Stockton is already on my WHEE map once you get way up to the top and Hwy 4 is also right near there and has been recommended to me by a couple of people - Most of the sand and crud RenoJohn and Fairlaner hit a couple weeks ago should be cleared off by now. Two roads known to be fun and easily connected by Hwy 395 may trump the driving into the sun, valley heat, and uncertainty of finding quality roads on a southern coastal route. Downside to both is they are in Nat'l Forest - back to potentially too many people, but that's a risk anywhere this weekend.

We've got a day to firm stuff up. I'll check the forum again a few times tomorrow.

Sorry about the "shotgun" approach to route planning...

Hans,

Did I throw too many options out? I'm gonna go get rid of the slippery crap on the new tires. Should also give me a chance to assess volume and idiocy level of the tourons in and around the Gold Country.

No... I'm okay....

I'm thinking northern coastal.... Let me know how your ride went today. We'll get it figured out tonight. Hg

James,

Stockton is only about an hour away from me and I'd be up (down?) for it, but I'm working through next Friday morning so have fun. I just rode Hwy 49 and some side roads north to south on Wed and they're in good condition. Have fun!

Jb,

I was pleasantly surprised by weather conditions today. Can't guarantee the same for tomorrow, but while warm, it was not uncomfortably so. Of course, I was in A/C by 2 p.m. - that probably helped. The tar snakes are definitely warmed up enough to render them slick and there are still a few corners with winter sand/debris. By the time you come east next weekend, the heavy traffic should have taken care of most of those corner sand traps.

About the same ratio of clueless asshats to courteous drivers as usual, but with the increased traffic, seemed I was hung up a lot more.

So - I was not able to eliminate the eastern route because of weather, which leaves east on 4 out of Stockton, back on 108.

OR :dntknw:

I head west, we hook up near your home turf and go northern coastal, which should be gorgeous (and preferred for me weatherwise) if you are up for playing in your back yard yet again.
