I guess I'm open to a lot of options. I looked you up on the map, and there's no obvious best middle ground that I can think of. There's the roads around Lake Berryessa, but on Memorial Weekend we'd be boxed in by trucks hauling boats.
I've been wanting to go up to Calaveras Big Trees ('course the tourons will be in force up there too), and I suppose would be willing to head up to the Gold Country even though I'll be heading up there next weekend.
Maybe we meet in Stockton, then head east into the foothills, loop up around north, dumping you out toward home and I head south on 80 at day's end. But I am not familiar with the roads up there, so cannot recommend off the top of my head. But I'm open.

P.S. We're talkin' Sunday, right? I promised Fang some honey time tomorrow, and I like to hang around the house Monday to putter before having to go back to work.
Jb,
Sunday will work - usually hate Sunday traffic, but hopefully the worst of it will be postponed to Monday by the holiday.
A few reasons to go coastal: 1) Sun will be at my back both ways, but in your face both ways if you come East, and in both our faces for more of the ride 2) You're headed east the next weekend, 3) COOLER at the coast - although East works if we go all the way to the fun roads at cooler altitudes, and of course 4) no CBA worries if I come to you as I have no political aspirations...
Since you just posted about Skaggs Spring Road, I'm guessing you don't want to bomb North on Hwy 1 again so soon?
Do you know anything about the roads in San Mateo County? A few roads west of Redwood City headed south towards Santa Cruz look like they have potential (Hwys 35, 84, 9, and 236 plus a couple of secondary roads - Why does Hwy 1 look so straight through there??) or East out of San Jose on Hwy 130 to San Antonio/ Del Puerto to Patterson. That'd put us an hour or so from Hwy 25 (Hollister), but back into hot weather. Come to think of it, Highlander had to get those skills somewere - there's gotta be good riding around Santa Cruz...
OTOH, Back to your original suggestion: Hwy 108 East of Stockton is already on my WHEE map once you get way up to the top and Hwy 4 is also right near there and has been recommended to me by a couple of people - Most of the sand and crud RenoJohn and Fairlaner hit a couple weeks ago should be cleared off by now. Two roads known to be fun and easily connected by Hwy 395 may trump the driving into the sun, valley heat, and uncertainty of finding quality roads on a southern coastal route. Downside to both is they are in Nat'l Forest - back to potentially too many people, but that's a risk anywhere this weekend.
We've got a day to firm stuff up. I'll check the forum again a few times tomorrow.
Sorry about the "shotgun" approach to route planning...
