Throttle body sync

Is anyone in NJ that knows how to do a TBS? I've been reading about it but I don't have the meter that's needed and haven't done one before either. My gen 3 has 4,000mil on it but I'm going on a long trip the 3rd week of May and don't want to have any problems. I want to have the bike running tip top since I tend to be heavy on the throttle. I'm just north of sandy hook and will come to you. Any help would be appreciated.

A throttle body sync won't improve your wide open throttle performance, and is never a show-stopper on the road. I'd be glad to help if you want to ride to Pittsburgh. You ride a 2013...you couldn't kill that bike if you tried. Tight battery connections, good oil and fuel. You're good to go.

+1 to what TominCA says. It is almost always spot on from factory. A very good Yamaha tech I know well listens to my bike and tells me it's not worth a special trip under fuel tank for. So at the 8k service when plugs and air filter gets replaced, we'll do the sync. I'm very comfortable with his opinion and assessment.

I can respect what your tech says. I only have 4k miles so I didn't think there would be a problem but then again I haven't owned a four cyl since I was 18yrs old. I've had Vtwins for a long time now. Just got off my Yamaha Warrior because I'm done with the vibration on the hwy. you know what happens, get a new bike, start reading all kinds of things online and your gears start turning. I appreciate the offer of helping and I will defiantly take you up on it around 8k if that's the time to start checking things out.

Just changed the engine oil and the final drive oil. New set of perelli angel GT's are on the way because I tend to rip tires up in NC on the dragon and surrounding roads.

I'll be glad to help. Also keep an eye out on the forum for tech days hosted near you by other members. A TBS is very easy and a lot of us have the CarbTune sync tool. I haven't heard of the Totally Really Definitely Completely Unauthorized TBS sync being done on a Gen III, but since FredW has a 2014 now, I suspect it has been done if it can be.

Fred keeps wishing his 2014ES ran like his old Galaxy Blue, but sometimes you can't have it all. His buns aren't being warmed so much now.

Super easy to do.... Mine was out with only 1900 kms. Not much, but it was out.

I bought the tool (Morgan Carbtune) and it works very well. It was my first time doing it and the hardest part was getting the little rubber caps off and on. I would not pay a garage to do the TBS. Just take your time and follow the steps like the video explains.

TBS is a vital procedure.. If you don't do one at least 22 times a year??

I'm at about the same miles as the OP and haven't felt a need to sync mine yet. When I do I'll be checking closely for the possibility of an UN-Authorised sync, but several folks here on the forum whose opinions I respect have said it can't be done; there is no mechanism for adjusting the individual throttle plates. I'm inclined to believe them.

Regarding Fred's Totally Unauthorized sync, I just performed it on my 2007. The results: I will probably open a new thread because it is so dramatic a change. Much smoother at all RPMs. But Fred unknowingly discovered a cure for an issue that numerous FEEJRs have been complaining about over the years: the stumbling and coughing when you blip the throttle. My 2007 would not pull a throttle blip smoothly since I owned it (66Kmi now), while other FJRs would do so. After the Unauthorized Sync, the throttle blips away smoothly

Glad the change was so dramatic for you. (And for the better!)

Just to make it perfectly clear, Slardy has a 2nd Gen on which the RDCUA TBS can be performed. The 3rd Gens being mentioned in this thread do not have the throttle plate adjuster screws that the 1st and 2nd Gens do.

Well, since I did it two or three years ago and have the carbtune, it may not be needed. I can however get together anytime to work on bikes or malfunctioning GPS units. I do want to lift the tank and change the plugs one of these days (way overdue), so I might revisit the TBS then.
