On my first real ride with only 300 miles on the bike decided last Saturday to ride up Angeles Crest Hwy. After 25 miles down the 210 fwy traffic stopped cold. Split lanes 1 1/2 miles before finding 2 downed Harleys on the opposite side of the fwy. Bummer, no gear just leather vests, jeans and chaps no shirts but it was about 90 that day. Splitting lanes at about 15 mph I didn't have much time for rubbernecking but thankfully everyone seemed ok.

10 miles further almost to the Angeles Crest exit traffic stops again. Split only about 1 mile before traffic was being funnelled into one lane. I got sandwiched between two semi's. One on the left wanted to make my split interesting and decided to turn the front wheels at me. I tried to dodge him but had only inches on the right too. In doing so he clipped my left mirror and side case ever so slight that I barely felt anything but I heard it. Thankfully the mirror flipped back rather than breaking off but I was so afraid to look, I figured the case was shattered. I kept riding trying to block it out of my mind because I didn't have time to safety look anyway.

Finally came upon the cause of the snarled traffic, it was a tractor trailer on it's side and 100 ft of fuel spilled over the road Fire and CHP everywhere. The fwy was essentially closed but I was able to squeek through on the FJR and get to my exit only 1/4 mile up the fwy.

Finally pulled into a Mikey D's and found that only the reflector was missing. No cracks and just a minor scratch that will polish out. What luck! Enjoyed the rest of my day riding up to 6000 ft. took some nice video and pictures. Total trip was 180 miles.

My question is has anyone ever replaced this light? I ordered a new one from Montclair Yamaha the same day and should arrive tomorrow. I briefly looked over the case to see how the light comes off but didn't see anything upon first inspection and thought I would ask the experts.

I'm not 100% sure but my guess is the reflector on the sidecase is stuck on with double-sided tape. And the new one should come with the tape already on it.

I wish you had asked here before ordering. I have two sets of them in the garage from my 05 and my 08. A LOT of people pull them first thing. Mine were off the 08 on the first night. Still not sure why I kept mine...

That said, it's just double-stick tape and the new one should have it. Don't clean too much before you get the new one in and you'll prolly have some small idea of where to line up the replacement.

If you want to get carried away and be extra safe, let me know and you can have the only triple-bag-reflector setup I have heard of!

I have two from my 08 laying around somewhere in my garage. That is one of the first things I took off.

If you ask me they look better off. I added the reflective tape on the bags to make up for the missing reflector.

Sounds like the bike is narrower without them too! Bonus!

Hadn't considered removing the reflectors yet but think I will... consider it.
