Here is the latest update on the construction plans for Trail Ridge Road this summer. I know that the road in places is in need of some major repair. The last time they did some work a few years ago, they chip-n-sealed the road and left large piles of rock on the edge of the road and in the middle.
ESTES PARK - Summer tourists will notice changes in Trail Ridge Road this summer as a year-long, $10 million construction project begins.
On Friday, snow plows began moving snow from the popular tourist attraction so paving crews could begin working on critical repairs to the road surface.
Through May 24, Trail Ridge Road will be closed each weekday at Deer Junction approximately 8 miles west of Estes Park at the junction of Highways 34 and 36. This portion will still be open to motorists on weekends.
If the weather continues to cooperate, Trail Ridge Road will be open for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.
However, from May 29 through June 29, construction work from Deer Ridge to Rainbow Curve could have some motorists seeing 20 to 30 minute delays.
The National Park Service says it is possible several stretches of Trail Ridge will be under construction simultaneously, but the worst delays will not exceed one hour.
From July 5 until the end of the season, the section of road from Forest Canyon Overlook to Alpine Visitor Center will be closed at night.
The Federal Highway Administration says night traffic is very light on Trail Ridge Road so that is why the majority of the work will be done from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. Monday through Friday.
The road will be open during the daytime and nighttime on weekends.
The construction will impact cyclists too, as they must abide by all traffic delays and rules during the construction project.
Trail Ridge Road reaches an elevation of more than 12,000 feet and is the highest continuous paved road in the U.S.
