OK, call me an anorak, but I have detailed tyre wear statistics in miles versus tread depth graphs for over 70,000 miles on my FJRs and the most important fact is they don't last long! Like not much more than 3,000 on the rear and 5,000 on the front, the lowest being 2400 on the rear (Bridgestone 020)and 3200 on the front (Bridgestone 021). The fronts wear out on the sides (about 30 degree of lean) and the rears pretty much all round. Although I sometimes get a good result from one make, the next example might be as bad as ever. At present, I simply use the cheapest main brand in the belief any reputable tyre is capable of outdriving the rider. Some makes, like Michelin Pilot Road, do last longer but cost up to 40% more than the cheapest competition so what's the point of them? I admit that I choose the side roads and the twisties for almost every journey but I get the same fuel mileage as everyone else so I can't hammer the bike that much.

My questions are:

What kind of riding is good for wear and what kind is bad? I've already established that long tours are better even when fully loaded than days out.

Anybody had really exceptional mileage from any tyre type?

Could it be that different batches have compound differences?

What kind of mileage do you all get?

This is important to me because of my high mileages. Even at the absurd UK cost of fuel ($9 a US gallon), my tyre costs are 50% on top of the fuel costs.

As a heads-up as to where this post will be moved very shortly, dabble around here and I'm sure you'll find everything you need

There is a thread, this POST specifically, which also contains detailed tire wear information.
