Since it's getting a bit cooler here (at least in NYS) I thought I'd refresh this offer. I installed the kit from FJRGoodies some time ago. It had everything but a few extra washers. As I understand it, the guards from the 650 do not have the barend clips. FJRGoodies sells the guards from a 1000 which has the wrap-around clips that attach to the barends shown in the second photo. Modifications to the guards involved moving the barends out a bit to fit the guard clips and taking off a bit of the guard plastic on the left side for clutch lever switch arm clearance. Washers can be used to move the barends. A dremel and a sanding drum made quick work of providing the needed clearance. On my first trip to work (55 mi RT) it started out at about 31° - a bit chilly. Overall the guards worked well, except, they weren't low enough to keep my fingertips out of the air flow, so they got cold. I went down to the shop and got a bit of light aluminum sheet and bent up some guard extenders. After checking proper fitment, I powdercoated them and used (3) SST M4 screws per side to attach them. Here's the final install on the clutch side:

They are much warmer on a chilly morning commute. I doubt you'd ever need electric gloves with these. PM me if you want a set with screws; $25 delivered.

I don't have the guards yet, but plan on installing them this winter. The extenders you made look like a nice add-on for the guards. I will definitely keep these in mind when I get the guards.

I installed mine when I mounted the hand guards for the NorCal ride last weekend. They absolutely solved the cold fingertip issue, exactly as promised.

Thanks, Gary. Top notch work, as usual. :yahoo:

PM sent

have a used set purchased from a peep here

still in the box waiting for Isabella to return to the fold and for winter to come last week of Dec :dribble:

let's ride safe and be careful out there,

I went to FJRGoodies and don't see the hand guard kits anywhere. What am I missing? Can someone send me a direct link?

Bob, you need to call them and order them over the phone. They do not have them listed on their website. I think the person you need to talk to is Guru Glen.

I run with a set of Garuald extenders on my handguards, and they make a big difference when the temperature gets really low. They also seem to keep my hands almost totally dry, even in the heaviest downpour.

You can also contact Gary McCoy (as per the Alternate Parts Source thread in the FAQ section). They are a multi brand dealer and he's hooked me up with Suzuki parts at the same discount.

I just bought a set of the handguards. Will be doing the install in about six weeks when I get back to town. Will order a set of the extenders from then. Many thanks.
