i need to know how a vacuum switch works on a bike, what voltage is required to make it operate and if it is the normaly open or closed. i am trying to start a vacuum pump with it once the vacuum in the tank is low. this will be used to operate an avcc on a bike that does not have any vacuum.

any help would be appreciated.

You would wire it in series with your vacuum pump, so you would need one rated for at least 12V and for at least the current draw of your vacuum pump. You can probably get them with either normally open or normally closed contacts or possibly both. You would want the contacts closed when below the set point (the point that you want the pump to kick on). You would also want some hysterysis so that the pump isn't continually cycling on and off. An example of hysterysis would be an air pressure switch on an air compressor. It would kick on at say 125 psi, then pump up to 150, and would not kick on again until bled down to 125. This info would be on the data sheet for the vacuum switch.

Not sure I understand why the bike doesn't have any vacuum, unless its a diesel or direct injected???
