Are gen 1 & gen 2 parts/gaskets required for a check/adjust the same? I'd think so... but just wanted to ask to be sure.

Not quite. For the Gen 1 you need the gasket for where the coolant pipe goes into the thermostat housing.

That is the one difference that I can thing of without checking the parts listing.

You will want to have on hand:

The two O-rings that go on the coolant pipes P/N 93210-18417-00

The one O-ring that goes between the coolant pipe and the thermostat housing P/N 93210-23787-00

A valve cover gasket P/N 5JW-11193-00-00

Timing cover gasket P/N 5JW-15456-00-00

You might not need the valve cover gasket, but it won't hurt to have it available just in case.

Timing cover gasket. This is much more likely to require replacement than the valve cover gasket. Note: Timing cover does not need to be removed unless you are removing cams to change shims. By removing it, you can make sure that you keep the cam chain from slipping a tooth. Engine can be turned over by manually rotating the rear wheel (in 5th gear), once the plugs are out.

This is great! I was about to post this exact same question.

My Gen 1 is due for it's first valve clearance check. (the PO didn't ride much.

I know the coolant needs to be drained. If the timing cover is removed, will the oil need to be drained also?

Thanks.

No. You may get a dribble of oil if the bike is on the center stand, but that is all.
