Maybe its been out there for awhile but I just came across motorcycle Valvoline dyno 20-50 oil. States it meets all warranty criteria for both air and liquid cooled four stroke bikes. Wallyworld at $3.90 a quart it's priced well. It will be in my FJR next oil change.

I'm giving it a try as well, rbentnail what was bad about your experience? I've looked at UOA's of the stuff, and it really appeared fine. Was it shifting problems?

Ditto, I'd like to know what problems were encountered. Please be specific. I'd be surprised if in one oil change I put bulk oil in the bike that I'd see any severe consequences.

Thanks, Bill

The oil is fine in summer at the recommended change interval. That is true of most. My research indicates it has a decent additive package for dino oil, and I have used the 10-40. Longer change intervals and more demanding trips, I use the Rotella 5-40, but if you want to save a few bucks, I don't see how this is a problem.

NEPRT topic but I haven't weighed in on an oil issue for at least two weeks.

Keep in mind this was a 1500cc kawi Cruiser, not ridden nearly as aggressively as my FJR. The difficulty I 1st encountered was the shifting. At about 1200 miles on the oil the shifting became clunky and stiff. At times when hot it was almost impossible to get from 1st to 2nd. Then was the faint smoke from the exhaust. So I dumped that crap in favor of Valvoline semi-synth, plain ol' auto oil. Had an oil sample done on the M/C-specific dino oil. Contained <1.5% fuel so it wasn't diluted but most of the "good" properties were gone with contaminants in line with previous samples. Oil was shot at <1300 miles. Turns out that bike really liked the Valvoline Semi-Synth oil tho.

Since then I have avoided M/C-specific motor oils religiously.

Not only is it CRITICAL to use motorcycle specific oils in your bikes, you must also use the correct type of oil. I only use Mobil synthetic V-twin oil in my VTX and Mobil 4T synthetic in the FJR. For the Speed Triple, I use a 50-50 blend of V-Twin and 4T. Anything else will cause catastrophic engine failure. YRMV.
