For the Vietnam Vets (FJRobert and others) ...

All I can say is it's about damn time! Thanks to all the Vietnam vets and others who've sacrificed and served in the military, allowing us the many freedoms so many take for granted.

Pawlenty designates March 29 to honor Minnesota Vietnam veterans

Associated Press

Published Friday, March 28, 2008

ST. PAUL — Minnesota’s Vietnam War veterans are getting a long-awaited “Welcome home” from their state government.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed a bill Thursday designating March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day in the state. His office said Minnesota follows Tennessee as the only states to carve out a special day for veterans of that war.

At a signing ceremony, Pawlenty told a crowd of veterans and their families that it was “shameful” soldiers from that conflict didn’t get a warmer reception upon returning from war.

“We are sorry our state and our nation did not properly thank you at the time. What we can do now is to try to do all we can to make amends for that,” Pawlenty said. “We hope this bill is one step and one gesture in that regard.”

He said the Vietnam Veterans Day — the first of which falls Saturday — will put the focus on the sacrifices of those veterans. The date was chosen because the last U.S. ground troops left the Asian country on March 29, 1973.

Because of the short window between the bill’s passage and the first day, the state didn’t organize any official event to mark it. But some VFW posts are holding events.

Yes it's shameful how disrespected Vietnam vets were treated. I'm a Vietnam ear vet, '63-67, but served most of my time in Germany. Was over there for 38 months & was shocked at reception when returning home. Many Vietnam vets I know & respect, were just flown out of Nam & released ASAP. No time to de-compress or any counseling, nothing to ease the transition back to being a human again. The military bears some of the responsibility also but society is the main culprit. Glad to see at least some politicos can see the hurt they've caused & step up to do the right thing.

Not to be disrespectful (and I'm a Vietnam Era Veteren myself, 1972-1976) but I'm just fine with being included with all the other Vets and will still be happy to celebrate on November 11th, as always.

<SALUTE> to the NAM VETS!!! <SALUTE> to all VETS!!

I am blessed to be in a family of Vets. My Great Grandfather served in WWI. Grandfather in WWII. Father 3x Nam Vet.

I appreciate them and all my fellow Vets!

It is truly one of the noblest of professions.

Thanks all fellow Sheepdogs. The wolves hate us and the sheep, well, they are sheep (some like us, some don't understand us, and some just don't care).

Take care,

Rex
