Hey any other folks from VA. I just ordered a mirror bracket kit from Garauld and have decided on Hella ff50's. Today was out and about and stopped by my local stealer to check their prices on hella's and piaa's. There shop is open on Saturdays and the fellow who inspects for them was there and informed me that driving lights that operated with the high beams and mounted above the headlights (cagers with offroad light bars) would fail inspection. I always understood, correctly I will add, that fog lights are for low beams only and driving lights are for high beams only and one cannot have more that two(a pair) of each in addition to not more than two headlights. I have even read the code and that confirms this. Bottom line, I know where not to take my bike to be inspected, but the parts guy tried to talk me out of a pair of piaa's that I may have forked over money for---poor customer service. I want lights to enhance my high beams around here when deer are attracted to vehicles like magnets at night. I figured that I don't run my high beams (that Va calls country lights) when there are any other vehicles present, so why would that cause problems? :glare:

Any input from others in VA?

 
But, if I remember correctly, Virginia law also says that if the lights have appropriate covers during inspection, they aren't considered lights for the inspection. This is why off road vehicles (hunting vehicles, etc) can have rows of lights on a light bar, etc, and still pass inspection. It's been 17 years since I was a cop there, but that was the rule then.

Yeah, but appropriate cover for the ff50's? I guess my wife could stitch something up.

 
You could always get the clear lexan covers for the FF50's, and spray paint em black on the inside.

Then you could paint a smily face on the outside and look like the rest of the rednecks :p

 
Better yet get a set of the Lexans and just do a tidy job of covering them w/ whatever color of adhesive vinyl toots your horn. Put it on the back surface, big enuf to overlap the edges, then trim it of real professional-like w/ a razor or an exacto blade. Then if you don't want it after you've been inspected just remove it!

 
I have the same setup and have had my bike inspected twice since I installed them - to problems or questions and no covers.

 
DPDT switches give you the following user options:

on all the time

off all the time

on with the high beams

just flip them off and be done with it during inspection. been running a setup like this in the DFW area for more than 10 years and never had a problem at inspection time.

 
Guy Young, the exec director of the Concours Owners Group, is a Virginian who used to carry a copy of the Virginia statute with him on his bike. You might want to pop over to the COG forums (concours.org) and ask around for that.

Thanks for the info. I already downloaded a copy, but it came from a third party website, so I wasn't sure of accuracy, but how often could it change?
