I just bought a used Gen 2 (2006) FJR1300A I did not get the extra lock cylinder that came with the bike from the previous owner. However, I did get the Yamaha Touring Trunk with the bike without any lock in it. The seller was confused as to why a $500+ touring trunk would come without the lock. I didn't figure out until later that it is because you are supposed to use the lock that came with the bike so it uses the same key.

Anyway, I am looking to buy someone's unused extra lock core. The idea is that I will see if I can get a local locksmith to re-key it to match my keys. Not sure if it's possible, but figured it was worth a try.

I think a lock mechanism from a saddle bag would also work, so if you have a damaged bag but the lock is still intact, that would probably work for me. I do not know how to get the lock out of it - I am assuming is possible though, because I know you can buy the kit that comes with 3 matching lock cores from Yamaha to fit the saddlebags and the trunk.

Of course, if you have a core and a key that you are willing to give up as a set, that would work, too - then even if I cannot re-key the lock, it will still work with a different key.

Thanks!

Dan

I bought a top case for my 06' about 6 months ago and could not find the spare lock. I ordered a lock from Yamaha and my local dealer had no problem rekeying the tumblers to match my bike. this all was done at the same time of the ignition recall. In reality what they did was rekey the new ignition and the new lock for the top case to match the locks in my side cases. They had it done before I could finish the free cup of coffee they provided.

I believe I have a new lock mech. and key from my ign. swap.

How does a $100.00 bucks sound?

Like old disc pads on a rusted rotor I'd say, so.....

Spit something at me while I go out to the garage and look.

Yep, got two new keys and the new lock assembly.

OK, Maybe I am going about this all wrong...

Is the lock core that one would get from an old ignition switch exactly the same as what is included with a new bike to be used in the trunk? I thought there would have to be something more to it - since the ignition is just an electrical switch, and the trunk needs some kind of arm to physically hold the trunk closed. When I look at the lock on the saddlebag, there is a metal flap (with the visible orange end) that moves to hold the latch closed. I just took another look at that lock, and I am wondering now if maybe that part is simply attached to the tumbler, and not really part of it... And that would mean that I am missing the lock core AND the metal piece from the trunk that would be attached to it.

Now, it just happens that my bike has not had the ignition switch recall done - I am waiting for the parts to get to the dealer to have that done soon.

So... Maybe I will have the extra core that I need as a result of the recall work, and then I just need to find the metal piece to finish the job? I am wondering if that is a part that comes with the trunk and the dope who bought it didn't know what to do with it.

I guess I should have posted a question in the technical area before asking for anything here.

I wish I could look at an extra lock that came with an FJR, and a new Yamaha trunk in its packaging to see what the full story is. My local dealer was less than helpful on this. They told me I was wrong when I said that my bike was supposed to come with an extra lock core. (Not really surprising to me, and this is why I deal with them as little as possible). I am doubtful that they will help me by giving me the extra lock core (they will want $$ for it, or they will try to force me to buy the 3 lock set from Yamaha for $100), but if I had all the facts, at least I would know what to ask (beg) for.

Thanks guys.

Did you look under the seat? I'm sure you did. That's where mine was.
Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I looked everywhere. I'll look again, but all I've found so far was the tool kit.

I guess I'll wait until I take my bike in for the ignition recall and see if I can talk the dealer into helping me out.

Thanks!

I found the spare lock cylinder and keys that came with my trunk. If you want them let me know.

Just wanted to post a public :yahoo: "THANK YOU!" :yahoo: to Frayne for hooking me up with a lock mechanism. I managed to find a locksmith who was not only able to re-key the lock to match my ignition key, but did it in about 5 minutes on - July 4 - for $5, including making an additional key for me (I only got one with the bike).

I now have a locking trunk and still one key for everything on the bike.

Thanks!

Dan

Dan, you were supposed to get the extra lock and the caps for the frame when the bags are removed. I have a 2007 and it took me 6 months to get mine. The dealer was supposed to order them for me, but kept putting me off. I finally got a factory rep to send them to me. I received the caps and three locks all keyed the same. I will probably never need these locks, but they were supposed to come with the bike and didn't. I see you are taken care of, but I would have sent one of my three locks and you could have had it re-keyed. My three locks are keyed the same, but not to my ignition. Glad it worked out for you and I have two spare locks, actually three, but will keep one in case I sell the bike. The other two can be given to good homes.

Need a lock mechanism really really bad ..... Just picked up a new 08 last week from the dealer. Did not check my locks like I should have .... went on a very short ride, got home and I'm missing one lock from the saddlebag. Dealer is saying he has to order the locks .... send them some where else .... then back to them .... sounds like a lot of down time with out bags. (Dealer says he can not find the spare lock either, lucky me. Does anybody have a lock.

Thanks
