Just a friendly warning. The last weekend in July is the annual Miatas at the Gap weekend. While they are a great bunch of folks they are expecting about 500 cars there this year as it is the 10th anniversary. Might make things a bit crowded. Plus lots of racer-wannabes in hot rod Miatas too.

Of course since my wife and I also own a Miata so we'll be there. And since I have my new (to me) FJR it will be there too. We'll be going up a bit early so should be able to ride in with the bike on Thursday and then stick to four wheels for the rest of the weekend.

Ya know what cracks me up, toe? Those poor schlubs have but one road to brag about. Sigh, which 'Dragon' am I gonna slay tomorrow...

I will add this to the list of reasons to avoid the "Dragon". Right after drunk guys with lots of patches riding crome tractors.

Sorry, but the Southeast has way too many great roads to risk your life riding with so many idiots. I may be a little overboard on this but i witnessed one of my friends get hit head on by some punk riding way beyond his skill level.

The Miata folks seem to be pretty down to earth types generally. Most will stay right-of-center and let you around them as soon as they get a chance. In fact, one time when our club was touring through the north GA mountains a couple guys on sport bikes came up behind our group af about 15 cars. We radioed up to the leader and when the road was clear we waved them arround the whole group of us.

Of course there was also the time we dogged the s*** out of some guy in an older model Corvette. <grin>...

Shoot, the whole Miatas at the Gap thing was started by a couple guys on the net that decided to meet up there one weekend. It's grown from the first 40 or so guys to several hundred cars. They go to great lengths to keep it very un-official and un-planned though. There are some regulars who feel that it has gotten too crowded to actually drive the Gap so they just stay at the motel and party with friends they only see once a year.

Generally a pretty good group...just gonna be a s***load of them there!

...of course I may be a bit biased..... :D

You'll appreciate this.

The young guy at our local BMW dealership, told me that he tells everyone asking for BMW with sidecar, to go out and buy a Mazda Miata from down the street. Swears that he makes the same recommendation for anyone asking about self-adjusting suspension like available on the GW.

Thanks for the post. I was actually considering a trip West to ride around Grandfather Mountain that weekend. Looks like I should probably go North and ride the Outer Banks.
