I guess this makes up my mind. Definitely wearing the waterproof riding jacket instead of the perforated gear.

Keep in mind that it's hotter than hell in many parts of the west now. We're talking record heat. Park City is at 7,000'. The lower elevations will be much hotter.

I wouldn't be too surprised by that weather forecast. I've lived above 6,000 feet in the mountains (Sierras and Rockies) for a good part of my life, and afternoon thunder showers in the summer are VERY common. Much more so in the Rockies than in the Sierras. In fact, the difference is best demonstrated in impact mitigating revegetation efforts associated with new ski run development. In the Sierras, you need to install an irrigation system (often off the snow making system's piping) virtually 100% of the time. Same scenario in teh Rockies, and you can count on the regular afternoon showers to do most of the work. That's why you typically see ski runs in the Rockies looking lush green, while most in the Sierras are mostly dirt, rock and maybe some green.

In Steamboat Springs, which is up against the Continental Divide, we used to watch a system come in from the southwest, rain on us, clear out, and then get caught in a circular pattern that would have the same system coming back in from the same direction an hour or two later. Some nice serial lightening shows with them too -- DAMN, but that makes me recall being young again.

Well, I live in the Phoenix area, so I'm quite familiar with heat. I've also ran a few rally's in Nevada, Utah, and Arizona so I definitely know about all day riding in the heat.

My main debate was if I was going to carry both the mesh and my main rally jacket, or just the rally jacket. Since there is a chance of rain Friday and I'll be riding at a rally pace to make it in time for din-din, I'll stick to one jacket. I'll also make sure to check my gallon of water during my fuel stop.

Which is a good point to bring up to everybody. It's FREAKING hot in the desert! Bring lots of water and stay hydrated! Drinking a 16oz bottle of water ever 2 hours is not going to cut it. Stay as hydrated as you can, and try not to drink soda while riding. They will actually work against you, and help in the dehydration proccess. I forget how exactly it works, but I do know in extreme heat (which very large portions of Utah are) you should aviod soda and sugar. Stick to water or drinks like Gatoraide or Poweraid. If you do drink a sports drink, you should dilute it to a 50/50 mix of water and sports drink. This is something a fire fighter friend of mine told me to do. It has to do with the amount of sugar and sodium in sports drinks.

C'monnnn, all this gloom and doom about hot temperatures is putting a damper on my SS1K on Friday. Guess I'll go commando under the riding suit, with layers to throw on after dark...

Also, where's Skyway? I think he needs to come up with a de-hydration kit, if you get my drift. All these piss stops will kill my overall time.

Don't get to worked up by the forecast, these T-storms come and go quickly. The little bit of rain will help cool things off and usually you can wait them out under a bridge if you don't like getting a little wet.

Plus they have been calling for the possibility of afternoon showers for a weeks and it hasn't rained for like 37 days.

For around here you are going to want light gear.

exskibum is correct. In the winter, Park City is a great ski area located in the mountains. In the summer, it's not unusual for pm thundershowers. The forecast alluded to above would be typical for mountain areas. I wouldn't worry abt it.

Another good reason to have gear that works from cold to hot, wet or dry. Y'all can too, as Cycleport owner Wayne Boyer is planning to attend and custom measure peeps up for his awesome wares.

So, the weather channel has 30% change of t-storms Thur, Fri, and Sat.

Link

However, NOAA cloudy Thur and Fri, and slight change of t-storms Saturday.

Link

Here in Reno NOAA seems better at calling the weather then WTC. Does anyone in UT use NOAA, and is it better then WTC?

Thanks,

I've got my speedo, thanks for the reminder!
This post is useless without pictures!
