Rode up to Downieville today -- on 49 via Grass Valley. Saw about 20 bikes today and at least 12 of them were feejers - so folks are arriving.

A suggestion to some that might want to be riding 89/49. If you had planned on riding one direction, say from Reno to The end of 49 and then returning via I-80, let me make a suggestion to you. Go over donner pass and take 20 to 49 (In Grass Valley) and ride the route clockwise. The reason is that just west of Downieville, there has been road work (looks like rock slides or mud) and the road on the up hill side is frequently pretty dirty. The other lane is clean. So the clockwise route will keep you on clean lanes and the ride over donner and then 20 (instead of staying on 80) is through the trees and much cooler. it was 88 up on donner pass.

Other warning - if you haven't been watching the news - the west side of the sierras is SCORCHING. 108 in Grass Valley today -

When I came through Stockton on Saturday my thermometer hit 118 and stayed above 110 for about 300 miles. BRING A GOOD WATER SUPPLY !!!! Stay hydrated - you could freekin' DIE>

the eastern side was much cooler. Downieville was a pleasant 99 this afternoon when I went through

Everything west of there was over 100+.

Be safe - drink water and stop if you get too hot.

See you in RENOOOOOO WFOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO5

Thanks, chickey. I've been watching weather and roads. Big heat, much suckage. Too, a diversion that I was planning is toast. Hwy 140 just got shut down due to a slide. That makes two closures for me (the other being 33 north of LV Rd). If 190 shuts down, I'm gonna be peest!

Hope this isn't a trend.... :glare:

Pussies! Man up, already, and let that pair descend!

It was 110F on the floor of the Columbian Baisn today. Summer is AWESOME!

And I tells ya what, these Avons really stick well in the softening asphalt! B)

Hey Twn, just a thought and not to be a smartie, would Hwy 395 be out of the question? Noticed better temps over there and out of the oven, er valley.... and some kickin scenry. PM. <>< ;)

B-b-b-b-b-but...the valley is starting a cooling trend today. Supposed to be MUCH cooler by Thursday...waaaay down in the mid-nineties. Uhm...thunderstorms predicted for Sunday. Heh-heh-heh-heh, you better bring a sweater and your liner.

shit man - I'm from Nevada - just a hiatus in San Diego -

I love the heat -

but I'd rather ride in comfortable weather. Just trying to save the life of a fellow rider. seriously - if you aint used to riding in the heat you had better have water and you had better stop and cool off.

it is a tad cooler today.

Well, now that my two riding partners have bailed due to the heat, I just may divert to 395. I dunno. For some reason the Highway/Weather Gods just don't seem to want me to run 49. Maybe I should heed their sage?

Or you could ride up the coast, take Hwy 41 to 99 North to Merced. Then take Hwy 59/J-59 to Hwy 108 East over the Sierras to 395 North...a sort of "pre-ride". :D

Eyes' jis tryin' tu hep!

Uh-course, if Mrs. Nutt is a'follerin yuh, she'ens uh'll prolly knot be im'-prest wuth yer root see-lexion.

Iffens y'all dee-cide tuh ryde ontuh Hwy 49, I'ma thinkin' yewell prolly knot find the rein and wind yewer gunna ryde en last thyme. Hmmmm, 41 to Oakhurst then 49 to Sonora (Skyway's for lunch) and 108 over the top?

Good suggestion Mike. Thanks. I got an invite to stay with the toecutters tomorrow night, then Bob and I will head up 49 and over 108. Mrs. Nut is on a plane Thursday scheduled to arrive early PM. Look out Reno, Patti's on her way!

Yup, it's only hitting 107 in Orangevale today! Woohoo!

Funny as it sounds, I don't go into the mountains without cold weather gear so I'll have my liners with me. Perhaps this is a result of being in a crazy snowstorm in the mountains...in July!!! That was Colorado, but the Sierra get pretty high too! Weather is unpredictable around these parts with all the snow on the hills and heat in the air, it makes for some torrential rains from time to time. [in the mountains]
