What Do I need to do

I had done some long touring rides before I tried the SS1K, so I kinda knew what I was in for (not really but I thought I did, which is what counts).

If your seat is not comfy for two tanks of gas, straight through, then you might want to do an aftermarket seat. There are a few to choose from, and it seems that everyone has their favorite, but if your butt isn't happy that makes the SS1K ride real interesting (ask me how I know...).

For a warm up, take a Saturday or a Sunday, plan a 650-750 mile loop, & just go do it. That will help you to judge what else you might need for an SS1K. My tips: Water wicking boxers/briefs like bicyclists wear will help with bun comfort, earplugs will help keep you from getting drowsy from constant wind noise, if you are a coffee drinker wean yourself down to decaf before the SS1K, get lots of sleep two days before the ride, ibuprofin helps keep the aches to a manageable level, don't be afraid to take a real long rest stop to recharge your batteries, if you start catching yourself taking microsleeps pull over at once ! :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

Oh yeah, have fun ! I did mine for the license plate holder initially, and did another SS1k after the first because of circumstances & because I knew I could. I used to limit myself in LD rides because I was afraid of big mileage, not anymore !!

:)

I just did my first SS1k this weekend ( sat)

things I learned thus far ( still processing and recovering ( mentally, not physically)...

If your friend is hestitant about going, he is going to bail on the first gas stop.

Don't overspeed in VA, 15 over is reckless driving.

Even though it is going to be 90 in the day, it is still freaking cold at 4am.

Every little town on the map doesn't have a gas station.

Stop for gas in the big cities if below 1/2 tank, sometimes it can be scary coasting into to a gas station between big cities.

Go into the bathroom if you want to use Goldbond. People look at you weird shaking it down the back of your pants while putting gas in the bike.

People also look at the space range weird when he comes out of the bathroom with white powder all over his pants ( ie: be careful applying the gold bond)

Your GPS has no qualms sending you 5 miles down a dead end gravel road to find a restraunt that is on another road in the same city w/ the same name.

You can find a great views of the ocean at the end of gravel roads.

People living in beatup mobile homes at the end of gravel roads do not like you turning around in their driveways.

Put a new battery in the Autocom (or whatever audio device you have)

Make sure your Wicking biker Shorts are not short shorts. i didn't get monkey butt, but I got bad monkey leg. where my legs sit on the side of the saddle.

Sitting on the edge of the passenger seat, lets alot of wind blow on your bum and alleviates monkey butt/leg

You will run out of things to think of, then you will think of why you ran out of things to think of, then you will start thinking of things to think of that you never thought you would ever think of. At this time, buy new batteries for the autocom.

The day after your ride, you will be brain dead and dyslexic. Avoid talking to much, or you will say something stupid. ( My wife and I were drving to lunch, I saw a guy and his kids putting flashing on the roof of his house. I said " look honey, that man and his kids are working on the fence. Isn't that cool." I dind't realize I had said fence instead of roof untill she told me later. I did this all day, and everyone enjoyed it very much.

overall, enjoy the ride, pick a great 1/2 destination. I went to a marina and had fresh crab in VA. Got to see a classic/antique boat parade as well...

It can be really helpful to have something to listen to on long rides - an MP3 player, an XM radio, etc. Turn them off in traffic and in the twisties, but droning for hours on the interstate will go by much easier if you have something fun to listen to.

I just did my first ss1k also this past thurs on the way to EOM.

Things that I prob could not have succeded with if I didn't have them:

Music

GPS - riding partner not me

a throttle lock of some sort

and highway pegs - I made my own some folks didn't care for their appearance but when I can stretch my legs at speed and not stop, it made all the diff. and the come right off after the SS1k easily. Function over form.

Thank you for the good info. I have road up to 600 milers two up before. The info that you guys have provided will be used. I told my wife that I wanted to become an Ironbutt, you should have seen the look she gave me.

Also, riding at 70 with no hands in traffic while fishing forward the CamelBack gut straps you forgot to connect at the last stop can be invigorating. I don't recommend it though.

Espescially if your running an Avon up front.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

I was glad I had my XM and MP3 player on my first SS1K, but after droning on listening to the music, I finally turned it off. In fact, I was pissed when my XM RoadyXT jumped out of the dock and flew down the slab. Didn't matter ('cept the money...) 'cause I put plugs in for the last half of the ride and pretty much cruised in sweet silence. Or I played Road Warrior. Or waved to chicas in cars. Nodded to truckers. Flipped one off that nearly ran me over. Then watched rain clouds for about 2 hours hoping I wouldn't get drenched. After it got dark, I couldn't see them any more, so it didn't bother me. I've ridden in a bunch of rain since then, and that doesn't really bother me, anyway. A good rain suit is worth it's weight in plastic.

Contrary to the dyslexic, wiped out comment above, I was feeling great the next morning, and decided to sneak in another 500 miles to make it a Bun Burner 1.5 K GO FOR IT!

Ahhhhh, that was FUN!!!!!!!!

Now going 600 or 700 miles feels like NOTHING! :yahoo:

Oh, and to be Iron Butt certified, you have to follow the rules, submit your money and your documents, then wait for at least 3 months to get your stuff. Unless you are really lucky. Or you went to WFO and did the corners of Nevada run. Now THAT would have been cool (not literally).

The Mason-Dixon 20-20 rally (every Memorial Day weekend) is a rookie friendly rally that always has a special SS1K route for folks looking for their first cert. It's a great way to get it done without having to line up witnesses, etc. You just turn in your route sheet at the end with your receipts, and the Rallybubba will send you the paperwork to send in to the IBA. It's painless. Well...okay...make that relatively painless. You're not protected from monkey butt.

It's for east coast folks. The rally runs out of York, PA. Great rally for experienced riders too. It pulls in many of the best on this side of the Mississippi. And Rick will give you the paperwork for whatever IBA ride you finish while riding. I've picked up two SS2k's and a BunBurner there.

The '07 rally info probably won't get posted to the web site until December or early Jan. For future reference, though, the web site is https://www.masondixon20-20.org.
