Geez. The guy asks a simple question!

Answer: Improve

In bike model names most letters have a meaning, but some are simply the designation given to a particular model, rather than giving it a full name.

F (usually at the beginning) means Four Cylinder. This was a letter adopted only by Yamaha, so an F as the first letter straight away means the bike is a Yammy! Honda also use F to denote four cylinders, such as VFR. Note placement of the F.

J refers to the engine type and frame design used in that model.

R (Used by many manufacturers) means the bike is a sports variant (stands for Race)

So while an 1 year old FJR might be completely different to a 5 year old one, the engine and frame are based around the same design, so it is still an FJR!

Many manufacturers name their bikes in this way. Some have given full names to certain models, such as the Fazer (FZR).

I'd guess that this response is the REAL answer....cuz it's on wikianswers! IT MUST BE RIGHT. ;)

Geez. The guy asks a NEPRT question!

Yes, absolutely the J denotes engine and frame because the 25 year old air-cooled FJ is the same engine and frame as the FJR. Who knows why we put coolant in ours though....... ;)

And the FJR is clearly more race oriented with the shaft drive. It smokes all those R1s and GSXRs out there.

And we all know wikianswers is infallible....cause it's on the innertubes.

I asked Dave, from B.C., and he says, "FastJoyRide"! He says it like he means it and Sylvia was nodding in aggreement, so it must be true! :D

I believe the F-J-R originated from the Four cylinders, J model frame, and Racer model updates.

I prefer to tell others it's Factory Japanese Racer 'cause that's what Yamaha wanted to build.

I personally call it my Frickin' Jet Rocket 'cause of the turbine like sound it makes on acceleration. :yahoo:

Why would anyone assume a Japanese motorcycle, designed and built in a non-English speaking country, would have a model designation acronym based on English words? "Fast Joy Ride"..."Fast Japanese Rocket"..."Factory Japanese Racer"......

Little baby Jesus just wants to cry because of this thread and others like it. <_<

I'll add a big set of FUZZY BALLS to ya fer that Howie!!!

Fukin' Just Ride

OOhhhhh! I got in before the door shut! :p

F is for overhead cams

J is for dual exhaust cans

R is for shaft drive.

Now shut that baby up! I'm tryin' to read, here!
