Last month I was invited by Lt. Steven Xiarhos of the Yarmouth MA police department to be in attendance as local groups stuffed over 100 care packages for our troops. The LT's son was one of the 33 Marines in the Iraqi Police compound that were saved by my son.
It was at the Yarmouth PD that I met a 15 year old named Dylan DeSilva. Dylan sent out his first care package when he was 12 years old because he wanted to do something to help the troops and since then has sent out over 3000 packages!! He started an organization called Cape Cod 4 The Troops and is now working on supplying schools and orphanages in Iraq and Afghanistan. He has even traveled to Washington's Walter Reed Hospital to meet wounded veterans and to personally hand them packages. He has begged, pleaded, and cajoled local merchants, citizens, and corporations, to donate material, manpower, and money to continue his work. Now he has just sent me an email letting me know that this Christmas he intends on sending out 500 care packages all in memory of Jordan. What a caring, driven, humble kid who hopefully, someday, will get the recognition he deserves.
So the next time your 15 year old is laying on the couch with a video game controller in his hand whining because he is bored and has nothing to do, have them take a look at Dylan's web site for inspiration.
