What is the decibel rating of the stock horns?

Not enough! That's the problem because Aunt Bea can't hear them and the kids have there boom-boom stereo so loud they won't hear them. Get some "man horns". When it comes to honking my horn, I want them to $&!# their britches, then look for the Buick that almost hit them.

Thats what I'm looking to do. I may try some 120db air horns for a truck  , but I want to know a starting point.

Go louder. Had 130's on my Ninja, and could barely hear em at speed.

I bought some 132 Db horns from CSK and installed them a'la the FJR Tech article. With air horns you'll need a tank or have the slight lag as the compressor comes up to pressure.

Edit to include this link.

Go to the bin-o-facts....

Search for Magnum Blasters

Stock fuse is 3 amp -- not enough. I used FJRandy's harness -- you can hear me now!

I just got the Nautilus Compact air horn and am going to install it in the next week or two. Randy has a good thread on this as does raclow. I'm going to go the "separate the components" route and I also am getting a harness from Randy. I will document my install and post for all to use. Raclow hung the entire package from one side as I recall.

So I take it no-one knows the stock DB rating?

Rickster I looked in the bin-o-facts The db rate is not there. Just more discussion of what people have changed to. (kinda like this thread).

Roger that fencer... no dB rating.... but the stock fuze is 3 amp. The Magnum Blasters draw as much as 12 amps.

Stebel Link: Clicky

(dynamic link, so you'll have to navigate to TM80, and hit the "Tech Info" tab.

so--- the stock horns use approx. 1/4 power -- P = V*A, so the Stocker's are 36.0 to 43.2 Watts of power, and the Stebel's are 144.0 to 172.8 Watts of power.

Stock / Stebel power is 36/144 = 1/4, 0.25, 25% power.

So -- by power -- the Stebel's use 4 times the power.

You'll have to be careful if you do get a dB number -- it depends on what frequency, distance measured, DIN weighting, etc.

For example: the tech stats on the TM 80's state >= 136 bB at a 4" distance, but >= 112 dB at 2 Meters and appears to indicate an A weighted DIN measurement setup.

suffice to say -- the TM's use 4 times the power, and I'd say (empirical SWAG) twice as loud at 20' measured with a 45 year old ear.

better or worse?

If the stockers were 6 dB less -- they would be 1/2 as loud.

If the Stebels are 20 dB higher -- they would be 10 times louder (it's a log thing...)

+1 on Randy's harness and the Magnums. What a blast!

Thanks Jim for the plug.

Fencer, I don't know why you need to know the stock db rating when you already know they aren't loud enough.

You won't go wrong with the Nautilus Compact Air Horns. You heard mine at SFO. They are what Yamaha should have given us to begin with!!! FJRandy may have some db tests for the Compact Horns. Stebel says they are 139db.

If I didn't do but one thing to my bike, the horns would be it.

Later.

I had myself all psyched-out. "I don't need horns. The bike has horns. Screw the horns." Then I messed up and read this horn thread.

I really thought you had horns. Everyone keeps telling you to blow it out your ass. ;)
