I'm at the wiring and plumbing stage of my FJR powered car. Can anyone please identify what this part is in the first picture. It is tee'd into a pipe going under the throttle bodies. What is it for and where do the other hoses go?

Quick picture of where I am to date. I built my headers last week, here is a picture of how they came out.....

California (only, not on 49 states) fuel evaporative canister.

Another question - the air induction system - is this necessary to use? Can I blank it off? Is it purely for emissions purposes or does it help power or anlthing else? My hood will be mounted quite close to the top of the engine and I would like to reduce height a bit if possible. It would also simplify plumbing.

I am not using a cat in the exhaust if that makes a differemce..

I believe you are referring to the reed valves. The reed valve assembly and associated plumbing is only for cold start emissions. When coolant is less than 'normal' operating temperature the ECU signals the Air Control Valve to actuate the reed valves. The sole purpose of the reed valves is to dump air into the exhaust right at the headers to provide 02 for secondary HC combustion. Once the engine coolant is up to normal temperature the ECU halts the Air Control Valve signal.

Yes, you can block off the air induction system without any significant impact to performance.

A member on the Blackbird forum went as far as to create exquisitly machineds/anodized block-off plates to replace the big , honking reed valves and associated plumbing. Makes accessing the spark plugs from the top of the engine go a LOT smoother.....
