I'll buy a the first person that calls it out a frosty beverage of their choice at EOM or wherever we meet.

Well that didn't take long... Veparado guessed correctly in a PM...

I'm missing my front axle bolt.

After our last ride down the dragon, my dad noticed my axle was, uh, sticking out a bit. He said "That don't look right to me".

Now what's jacked up is:

- I torqued them all, all (4) pinch bolts and the Axle bolt

- I double checked them all and re-checked my triple bolts cause I had just had the forks out to service them.

- Also the top off to re-torque the head bolt prior to the trip.

I tightened up the four pinch bolts and rode her home. Have said bolt on order.

I was working back through my photos trying to figure out when I lost said bolt. This photos is late in Sunday afternoon, I ran the Cherohala Raceway w/o that bolt

And apparently the Dragon too (not good).

I think I'll use a little blue loctite next time.

Axle bolt...or axle nut? You lose the axle bolt on a Gen 1 and the wheel falls off. Gen 1 has one pinch point and only an axle.

I assume there's something less substantial that threads into the more substantial part on the Gen 2?

Believe it or not, but I was looking at that area on the higher res version of the photo, but because I didn't know the particulars of Gen 2 I wasn't sure if it was cosmetic or not....and didn't say anything. I was even making sure the tab was lined up on the ABS housing. ;)

Yep, the GenII's have 4 pinch bolts and a large axle bolt/screw.

And that's the first time I've seen a missing axle bolt. I've seen loose pinch bolts before, but never a missing axle bolt. Maybe it's time to get your torque wrench calibrated?

Uhhhh, are you sure?,I'm pretty sure that was Renegade who performed that maintenance ....uhh, and he is nowhere to be found it seems. Next time mdisher, I suggest you do your own work.

BTW: anyone see that guy leave? Must have snuck out the back door at night.

LOL

Yep, I double checked with him and he's sure...

& the loose front wheel is what pushed the pistons back in your brake calipers causing your pucker moment. :eek:hno-smiley02: :shok:

I’d say this all happened around the same time.

Better get that torque wrench recalibrated.

That makes perfect sense. I think I'll just buy a new torque wrench.

Dont feel too bad, I rode a couple of hard "Arkansas Twisty" days back in May, only to discover I had no upper pinch bolt at all, on the right side fork. Had nothing to do with the torque wrench, but the torgue wrencher was fired!

I hate to say it but after all that service work the most likely explanation is that the axle was never tightened. Nobody ever plans to get sidetracked and forget. I had my track only SV for 8 years and have had it apart lots of times. I had the forks off for service and put it all back together in plenty of time for a track day... a week ahead of time so no rushing involved. Fast forward....when I got home from the track day and was cleaning it up all four bolts on the bottom triple clamp were backed out to the point of a 1/2" of threads showing :dribble: Top triple clamp bolts were fine. I would have bet you $1000 against me forgetting to tighten those bolts but there they were.

Yeah... That's the most likely scenario... :/

I very clearly remember re-checking everything the next day though cause I re-tourqued my head bearings. Getting side-tracked is not out of the realm of possibilities though.

It's all good, I'm home alive, and the bolt is on order.

WWI.

Wrenching while intoxicated.

Very common problem, especially for FJR owners. Thankfully we're mostly pretty good ol' boys and girls , and somebody or something watches over us and keeps us from phuckin' ourselves up too bad....

WWI :) Yeah might have been the Knob Creek. I should probably sue them.

Kinda have to agree the TW never saw that bolt... Just sayin'.. been there, done that..
Oh yeah, I'm with dcarver on this one. Hi Don!

Doing my own wrenching, I missed the bolt hole in the rear stabilizer bar which keeps the rear brake caliper from spinning, when I put on my last rear tire. Rode a spirited ride all the way to Creston then to dcarver's place and never used the rear brake. Hardly ever use it anyway.

Leaving dcarver's place on gravel, I make it all the way to the paved road and hit the rear brake. OOPS, = tore off the rear brake line and the ABS sensor in a blink of an eye when the rear caliper mount rotated with the tire. Puddle of brake fluid under the rear wheel. Fortunately, I was nearly at a dead stop when this happened, and thank goodness the '05's don't have linked ABS braking. I rode the bike home 30 miles with the front brake only. Cost me $238 to obtain a new rear brake hose and a rear ABS sensor. Ouch!

Thanks for heading back to the barn and bringing out your tools in the truck Don! I muchly appreciated the effort!
