On my way to the shop this AM; on the local slab. A youngish-looking fellow on a bright red VFR merged from the right, changed lanes crisply and continued on his way at a very high rate (80-ish, when most are 65 - 70) in the outside lane. He was wearing a nice looking, newer full face, gauntlet style gloves, an armored textile jacket, and heavy above-the-ankle style workboots (probably Wolverines), and very heavy looking white socks.............and shorts (and I saw all this very clearly because the visual picture was so.......different).

So.....just where WAS this young fellow on the squid scale?

Not too squidly. He had everything but the ballistic pants, and wasn't pulling wheelies. I still commute without ballistic overpants... I should know better. I rode with some sport bike guys for a while and was able to keep up and spank some of them... BUT... full face helmet, gloves, T-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes... you get the picture. I stopped riding with these guys when they wouldn't stop yanking wheelies in traffic.

Partial but not full squid. I saw a young guy on a Gixxer with a very nice looking FF helmet, tank top, shorts, sneakers and back protector. I guess protecting his spine was important enought, that he might be able to savor every last twinge of the road rash.

A buddy said it best..

Harley dudes wear 1,000 worth of leather and a beanie helmet.

Sport bike guys wear a 600 dollar helmet and shorts..
