FUGLY!!! That's what it is! Just like Iggy's FJR and mi ******* step-pappy's face.

Yikes!

Had one of those guys in my back yard a coupla days ago in NW Indiana. My black lab went crazy trying to catch it.

They look different at 80 mph against your face shield
Holy sheet! I think that would warrant an immediate pull over for a clean up...face shield and underwear!

I think it's a 'christian moth', see the little fish on it's wings?

Cecropia (sp?) moth, perhaps. Had one sitting on my car up in northern Wisconsin about 15 years ago. Pretty cool. And yes, I imagine neck sprains if one hits your faceshield.

Wiki-interesting:

"The Cecropia Moth...is North America's largest native moth...with a wingspan of 130 mm or more (5+ inches)."

"The females emit pheromones at night, which the male can detect with its large, plumose antennae. Males can fly for miles in order to reach a female. The moths mate, and the female spends the remainder of her life laying eggs, while the male may mate several more times."

And here it is: (finally, a payback on 4 years of tuition and housing costs...)

First pic:

Silk moth of some sort. Family Saturniidae. Looks like it's missing it's head? weird angle on the pic at least.

Second pic:

oh very cool. Yeah deff a Saturniidae. Good lookin female

I shoulda known that this thread would have legs and take off. Earlier today I sent '2shabby my guess as to whatzzit. I believe that we are seeing the underside of the moth (it is a moth, it has harry antenna which butterflies don't). Under side color and pattern can be wildly different from open wing patterns. There is a local butterfly place that we go to with our cameras and have a great time. The following are a couple of pictures I took of a Morpheus Butterfly. The first picture is with the wings closed and the second is with the wings open.

Good Pillion reserved the place one Saturday morning as a birthday present, for a fair price we had the place just to ourselves for almost all the morning. When the place opens the butterflies are cold and sit still, then as the day heats up they start to fly. We shot pictures beyond counting without crowds and especially no running, screaming kids :)

Edit: I see kaitsdad spilled the beans while I was posting. I had guessed that the moth was a Giant Silk Moth- Antheraea polyphemus Order: Lepidoptera / Superfamily: Bombycoidea / Family: Saturniidae
