Ok, so it still in the 100's here in AZ. I have a busness that gets me traveling from Gilbert to Casa Grand AZ every other week. Its about a 50 mile drive each way. I love that its just another excuse to pull the fej out of the garage. I'm an early riser, I'm usually at the gym by 5am and just wake up by 4:15 every morning. Saturday I wake up bright and early as usual and get on the road to Casa Grand by 445am to beat the heat, beautiful morning, about 82 degrees, suns not up yet. I get to my destination, take care of business and I'm back on the road by 6am for the ride home. It 6:10 and I'm on a quiet rural road a mile or two from the freeway and up ahead I see this big *** brown thing in the road. As I approach I realize it a friggen OSTRICH! It just stopped in the middle of the road and was staring me down. It was too narrow of a road to pull a Huey and I came to a complete stop. I was really affraid to pass it. It stood at least 6 ft tall and I was afraid that if I spooked it I could end up with it chasing me or pecking at me. I know I sound like a big woose but man I was scared. After a minute or so it just started to walk away, I passed and lived to share this with you guys. Just thought you might find it amussing. It funny how you realize just how exposed you are when on your bike and somthing like that happens. :cryingsmiley:

Dude, if an ostrich chased and caught you on a FJR, I'd have laughed my *** off cuz that would have been one fast ostrich!!!!

Pecking is the least of your worries with those critters. They have a sharp toe on their foot that can ruin your day if they connect.

How stupid would I have looked being found laying next to my Fej all beat up and kicked to death by a bird?

*Really* stupid. You did the right thing by waiting it out. if you had spooked it and it had come after you, it could have done some serious damage.

All that being said, I have the funniest mental image of you in a staredown with an ostrich... :)

From Farm training days:

The Ostritch will out sprint you.

Main defense is spitting some real vile gack!

Do not stare down, they will charge and use the afore mentioned feet!!!

Also, just re-read your timeline. 2 hours on the road, a few minutes of "work", and all before the rest of the local world is alive.

Sweet!!!

Haha...I actually got my *** kicked by an Emu once (smaller cousin, I think, of the Ostritch). My wife thinks it is the funniest thing ever.

I was working the Grave shift in an area that had lots of Emu farms. We got a call that one was walking on the frontage road next to the Freeway. When I got there, it was attempting to go to sleep, but I couldn't leave it there cuz if it got up and got hit on the freeway, someone mighta died. So I call animal control and we then start calling surrounding Emu farmers. The two they get a hold of have no idea who it belongs to but advise us we should just kill it. Well, I didn't wanna do that, so we decided we would catch it, and put it in the back of the AC officer's truck.

I called a friend and had him bring us a rope. Upon roping the Emu, the fight was offically on. My friend and the ACO just stood there and watched. I grew up on a ranch, so I thought I had a handle on things. I was wrong. After a good couple of minutes, I get the Emu on the ground and get it's feet tied up. I stand up, to get help lifting the bird onto the truck and realize that it is now DEAD. Apparently their defensive goal is to not get eaten alive, so if you scare them too much, they just die.

My uniform was torn, and I had scratches all over my face and arms. Next time I will follow the farmers advise. I'm not sure who was stupider that night...Me or the bird.

I had a staredown with a bison once in the Wichita Mtns Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. Came around a curve over a slight rise and there it stood, a big bull bison. He was crossing the road, you could see the well worn trail on each side of the road. He just stood and stared at me and a buddy. After about a minute he moseyed on his way. We had the "oh ****" moment at first, no way we could have turned around and skedaddled out of the way if he had decided to claim his territory. Don't realize how big they are until you are about 20 yards from one in the middle of nowhere.
