Hi all just wanted to know if my Metz Z4 with about 3500 miles will make 7000 mile. Big road trip in 3 weeks, leaving Reno then Utah Arizona New Mexico Colorado Montana Idaho then back. Just wondering if I should say the hell with it and spring for some Avons any feed back would be appreciated. THANKS

I would not count on the Metz Z4 to last 7K on the trip you are describing even if they were brand new. If you are planning to be anywhere near Tuscon, AZ, during the week, SW MotoTires quoted me a price of $47 to mount and balance both the tires on a FJR -- and they sell the tires at the Internet price when you visit their showroom.

Just got back from CFO. I now have 5,000 miles on my MZ 4's. I'm sure they have a 1.000 miles left but not sure about 7K. I'm going to ride locally and then put on the Avons.

I think I misread your message because I thought you were going to go 7K on your trip. If you are only going to ride 3500 miles then you probably can make it if your tires still have 5/32nds of tread in the rear and 4/32nds in the front. Any less and you will probably be deep into the wear bars before you get back.

I get at least 10K on a front Z4 or Z6. Next set will be Avons and if mileage is not near the Metz, it will be the last set...I don't drag hard parts on the street.

Are those the OEM Metz? I have 10K on mine. The front is shot. The back is ready for a burn off. Replacement tires in hand and ready to change before EOM. Trying to baby the original tires a couple more weeks.

I think you are ok for xcountry touring. Depends a lot on how you ride, though. I'd probably leave yours on and plan on changing them when you get back.

I got 6K on OEM Mez4 rear getting very close to the wear bar. Front not super bad. Replaced as a set with Avon's. Now have 7K on the Avon's & it appears there is approx. half of the tread left on the rear. Front is looking good. I weigh 220# & generally corner faster than those I ride with (assortment of touring bikes, & cuisers) but I don't generally scrap pegs, etc. I thought the Avons had a different feel on initial turn-in to curves-not bad just different. I got used to them in several hundred miles & plan to replace with Avon's again due to my experience with longer tread life. I liked the Mez4's too-just didn't last as long. I run 38# in the front tire & 41# in the rear.

I would think that the question you need to ask is how you are going to be riding the bike on this extended trip. If it is just going to be gentle highway miles there shouldn't be a problem.

I've read alot of people in here talking about switching to the Avons. How many here have made the switch, and what has been the single most noticeable change in the way it handles? I know alot of people here have to drive in wet/semi-wet weather from time to time, but I don't really have that issue to contend with in San Diego. This year was unusually wet, but it only lasted a short while. Is there another tire that anyone recommends for San Diego type weather. Thanks.

Aaron
