What I meant was you cannot change/adjust idle or much else on a modern KTM unless you have the factory authorized computer - $2,500. At least that's what my two KTM pals tell me (990 and 1190). They are trying to figure out how to finagle one of these devices so they can do their own tuning/service etc.

Can't alter the idle on a Gen 3 FJR. Don't know if a dealer can.

Yikes! I'm struggling with replacing a battery on a BMW (4 wheels, not 2) because you have to "register" the battery with the car's computer--and the dealer wants $154 for that, another $154 for changing the battery, plus a stealership markup of a $175 battery to $300. So, I've got the reprogramming cable, but the SW that came with it is $#!t and can't even find its own files--so now I'm looking to down-load them. IF I can get that working the rest is easy. But this business of trying to drive out independent mechanics and do-it-yourselfers is absurd. Plus, marking up repairs and parts on any vehicle that isn't bottom-of-the-barrel super-economy, is just wrong.

Ironically, this hasn't made repairs faster and easier. It's made them slower, harder and more expensive. Parts aren't in stock--now they have to be "drop-shipped" and that means waiting an extra day or two--even for tires! Even oil changes have become a big production. Nothing like having a Toyota dealership mechanic ***** about how hard it is to change the oil on my (now departed) Toyota Tundra! It's his company's own damn vehicle! He's SUPPOSED to know how to do it!

No offence but, that is exactly why you don't buy cars like that.

All car makers are headed that direction though. I could cite so many examples of that high end car nonsense owning an independent service shop in an affluent neighborhood. The shop doesn't have access to all the dealer network specialty scan tools, which makes it hard for them too.

I'm not offended--I agree! 100%! And I'm thinking this is the LAST European car I'm going to ever own. (But it is a heckuvalot of fun to drive--6 speed stick, clamshell drop-top, light colored seats that don't get as hot in the summer sun, 300hp)

One word...

Corvette

The new C7s are freaking awesome...

Def allot bang for the buck.

$60k buys you a ton of fun, and you can still work on them yourself.

As fun as done of the European stuff is, it's just too much hassle.

4 door pickup and a vette is a great combo, along with the FJR and an FZ09 !

TOTALLY COVERED 👍😈

Not bad!

Got the 4 door 4x4--with the 6 1/2' bed an FJR can ride in! Don't have the FZ09--because I still have my '02 FZ1! With Ivan's Performance Products jet kit and a Yoshi exhaust it's been dyno'ed at 125hp. Still runs like silk.

My problem with the Corvette is an odd, but simple one: They STILL don't have built-in or deploying roll bars on the convertible. Flip one you're dead. Period. O/W they've come a long, long way from the straight-line, bad handling, a/c-instantly-failing machines they once were. I also have another problem: The profile of a vette owner is a 59 year old white male....too close to home. Don't like to be so predictable!
