 I picked up a new '07 AE in October of this year. I really like the bike, great power, great handling and some cool features, HOWEVER, the wind noise/turbulance on this beast is driving me nuts.

I've been riding since the late 60's, and my other current mount is a 900SS Ducati. I'm 5'11" and wear a Nolan 102 helmet. On the Duck, all is quiet and peaceful, on my new, fully faired tourer, I'm being severely beated and battered by wind and incredible wind related noise. I'm even wearing earplugs while riding (first time EVER for that) and it's still bad.

With the stock windshield I could adjust where I could have either turbulance or noise (or BOTH!). I've just installed a new V-Stream shield and finished a 450 mile run today. While it's better than stock, it is still incredibly noisy. (Note: I stood up on the pegs for minute to stretch my legs and "presto"-calm quiet air. That's great, 'cept it's hard to ride while standing!! :yahoo: I was able to find a quiet and calm patch of air with the new shield, but ONLY when in a "racing crouch"-which is NOT what I bought the FJR for (If I wanted to be uncomfortable I've have stuck with my Duck for long distance!)

I'm desparate for any ideas or suggestions to bring some quiet to the rider's position on a FeJer....Any ideas guys? THANKS!

First, welcome to the forum.

There are numerous threads on the topic and it really comes down to what fits you. With the VStream on my 2007, I'm in a pocket of still air, and I'm an inch taller than you. It depends on how much of your height is inseam, how you sit fore-aft, speed, and helmet. My Arai is a world noiser than my old Shoei. On my 2004 FJR, I had two windshields and in the summer kept the shorter one in the down position, which kept clean smooth air from the tops of my shoulders and up. I had a +4" Cee Bailey that I'd get just a bit of helmet rattle from in the raised position, while others swore by that windshield.

Again, try the search function and watch for threads with people who seem to fit a description of you, or in worst case just raise the shield till the wind breaks just below the helmet.

Well, you could just take the windshield off.

Just sayin...

First one's free. Clicky

There are a million of these in the NEPRT section. Also search the Tech/Mech forum.

Use +wind+noise or

+wind+screen or

+windshield+.

Lots to read

Good luck.

OldBear,

I am only 5'7 have a long torso, 28ish inseam and have the large CalSci shield, (has lower vents to relieve backpressure) and with the shield 2/3 of the way up experience a quiet ride (except in crosswinds) the laminar flow of air hits my helmet just above the shield and for the most part it is heaven. An extra large CalSci might do the trick for you. I like the looks of it, it tapers at the top, IMHO, is not as butt ugly as others and has held up well over the past 1.5 years. I got mine because on long rides the dirty air (from buffeting with the stocker) was causing intense neck/shoulder pain.

Hope you find something that works for you, cuz the FJRrrrr.... is such a great bike,

BTW, check the plastic screws every once in a while, they vibrate a bit loose, but don't overtighten them...

It HAS crossed my mind.....though ya gotta admit it sort of defeats the purpose of having a faired bike :yahoo:

In any event guys I sincerely appreciate the input and ANY and all other ideas/suggestions that y'all may have. I LUV my bike, but this wind/noise thing is getting to me.

I want to put some serious miles on this scoot, and would vastly prefer to be able to enjoy 'em! As it sits, short haul and/or slow speed (but who the heck want's to go slow!) aren't bad, but at interstate speeds 75-80 (or more, already tried that  ) the moise is a serious issue.

Thanks again for your help!

You have entered the "Twilight Zone" of the FJR. Many of us have searched long and hard to find Windshield Nirvana.

For years I had two windshields, one for Summer and a larger size for Winter and STILL had to wear ear plugs and tolerate a certain amount of turbulence.

I will say that the CalSci was the best Winter 'shield I owned. Absolute calm while riding! However, because of the amount of wind it blocked it was too warm to ride behind once the local temperature rose above 85 degrees, so I would switch back to my Cee Bailey +4+3, standard contour.

At 6'2"x32"inseam, Russel saddle that is +1" height, I sit rather tall-in-the-saddle and I realize I've changed the seating parameters so I must find my own solution.

I'm currently using a Cee Bailey +4+2, standard contour (Link to Cee Bailey) with a Vario Extension Spoiler (Link to Twisted Throttle). I installed this set-up last Spring and used it on my trip to NAFO (3500+ miles to Golden CO and back). For me....this is the best I've found. The Vario is adjustable so I can change the wind management to suit me by using that adjustment and the windshield. It has served me well riding in temperatures from high 30s to 100+ and I still enjoy the calm pocket" but get enough air in the cockpit to use my MiraCool Vest. And I am able to ride without earplugs because I have still air around my helmet.

Good luck on your search adventure!

Thanks MadMike! I initially was wondering if it was just me. What a great bike to be bothered by such a problem.....Make's ya wonder if anyone at big Blue ever put one in a windtunnel..... I really believe an FJR with a "quiet" windsheild and a decent, honest to goodness cruise control just might be THE bike (at least it sure would be for me :clapping: Thanks again! Please keep the ideas coming!

Nope - many of us have varying issues with the stock shiled with varying degrees of resolution.

Can't disagree with you at all - It's a damn near perfect bike for me!

A lot of us have experimented with after-market windscreens to deal with the noise and buffeting problem. I replaced
the stock windscreen on my '07 with a CalSci XL and that made a big difference but it's still not as quiet as I would like (I'm 6'3" with a 32" inseam).

Another approach to deal with the noise problem is to consider the design of your helmet. There is some
good information about this on the WebBikeWorld web site. Try the following link:

Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to take a look. My helmet is a Nolan 102, and is not normally a "noisy" helmet (very quiet while on my old Ducati), but I guess it could be a combination of helmet plus wind on the FeJeeR..... I've got a couple older helmets around, may I should try 'em and see...

I picked up my 07 FJR about 16 months ago. I hadn't planned on riding a bike home that day, so didn't have a helmet with me. The dealership loaned me a used full face helmet with no shield. I wore an old pair of sunglasses that were in the wife's car. As soon as I got up to freeway speed, the turbulent wind knocked one of the lenses out of the sunglasses! I ended up riding home scrunched down to keep the air blast out of my unprotected eye.

My first replacement shield was the Vstream. I'm happy with it for winter use, but it's too hot in the summer. So the next shield was a Cee Bailey flip shield with +2" height. This one is my summer shield. The interesting thing about the Cee Bailey shield is that due to the flip profile, I don't have to run it up as high to get relatively clean air. The Vstream must be raised to where I'm almost looking through it before the air gets smooth. So a taller flip shield might work for you.

One other point I've noticed; no matter the shield, I still get some turbulence if I'm riding close behind other vehicles ( and some are worse than others). All my shields are smoother with no traffic in front of me.

I'd also suggest updating your profile with your location. There's lots of helpful people on this board (and a few jokers also  ) that might be willing to let you try one of their shields. I know I've done that for a local FJR owner.

Thanks Much! I really enjoy the bike, but if I could quiet it down (windnoise wise) it would be a LOT more fun to ride. I really have earplugs, but without 'em it's hard on the ears.... Thanks again. Also, if anybody from my area is also an FJR nut I'd like to meet 'em. Not a lot of us out there (comparatively). Thanks for the help and ideas..

I have a Nolan N102 that I wear sometimes, and I have found it to be a relatively quiet helmet too.

I do wear earplugs for interstate speeds with any helmet.

I have not found the FJR to be particularly noisy, but I am the kind of guy who does not generally care for windscreens, and when a bike has a windscreen that is adjustable, I put it in the lowest position. This may be a throwback to the days when most bikes didn't have windscreens.... and I just got used to it. Two of my current bikes don't have windscreens, and that might be why I think the FJR is reasonably quiet.

When i purchased the bike and started riding it on the hwy i said what the %^$#@*& this is ******** for 12k and someone is pushing on my back also my rist was killing me again $%$#@#@ 12k for this . In the 5 boros of new york there is no such thing as a test ride . I said to my self what the hell did i buy (super top heavy also). All i had to do is come to this forum and in a flash found the fix cee baileys 4x 2 screen i am 5feet 7 in. tall and put on a set of risers . love it the next best thing for my 05 was the rear shock changed to a penske what a ride its wort every penny .

GUNNY!!

I don't think there is a perfect windshield.

I'm also 5-11, I do like my V-Stream on my Gen1. I siwtch windshields two to three different ones a year. Stock for moderate weather, shorter then stock for real hot weather mainly a couple summer months, and the V-Stream for winter, nothing like a barn door to protect you from the wind. Still not perfect but I'm tired of buying windshields. I also had a Cee-Baily's +4+2. Don't really care for it.
