I have lived with the auto retract for almost 3 yearson my '05. Unable to locate that little connector, I just kind of gave up. Then from this website I got onto a FJR tips web site. Showing the picture of the little access panel on the front of the fairing (Which I didn't even know was there) , I removed it and there the little bugger was! Yes these little items found on this site are a life saver. Thanks to whatever that tips site was( did not book mark, and now cant find).

Glad you found the connector on your 05. I'm still looking for the darn thing on my 07 even after some tips from Bounce and some others. It must really be hidden well, as I am now an expert on removing panels C and D after three times. Guess I'll live with it a few more years! :)

Does the new one have the access panel behind the windshield??? If it does the one allen screw removes the 3 inch square panel.

Nope. I haven't pulled the windshield, but can't see anything and other 07 owners on forum have pulled it with no panel.

I'm going to give it one more try this weekend. Have a friend with real smallnd good eyes coming down. Maybe a few Bud lites will bribe him properly. :)

If you guys find it, post pictures for the '06. I've spent at least an hour on and off looking for the darn thing.

Haven't taken the windshield off yet. Last time I did was to put a Rifle W/S on and I "buggered" a couple of the plastic screws doing it. I don't want to have to deal with plastic screws again unless I'm sure I can find the "jumper" or until I buy a new windshield.

Is there really a little access panel behind the W/S on the '06? I can't see it.

Heck with it. I'm going to take up drinking instead! :dribble: :dribble: :dribble:

Could you access the little front panel with the engine running, the windshield up and remove the jumper ? Just curious ? If you could it would eliminate the step of removing the windshield.

NO, just pull the windshield, it will only take a few minutes. Once the cover is off, the jumper is located down in the left side (as you look at it from the front). Its not real easy to grab and disconnect so you'll need the room to operate with long nose pliers and a screwdriver to pop the clip.

One of the first things I did on my '06 was disconnect the auto retract. I didn't look for it from the top, rather I removed the plastic panels over the battery and around the instrument panel (A-B, C-D I can't remember). I spotted the connector when I was moving wires trying to hook up a PDB.

If you go this route it is probably tucked up behind some wiring and you should be able to pull it down and towards you some. IIRC. Once you disconnect it reconnect the battery (you always disconnect the battery when working on electrical stuff right?) and see if that is the correct connection. IMHO I think the auto retract was a bad idea. Why have it retract after getting it in the perfect position when you stop for 5 minutes to get gas? :blink:

When I took out the allen screw I was supprised that there actually was a panel there. The fit is perfect, so you wont notice a panel untill you take out the screw. I used long needle nose to grab the connector. I am a happy boy now.

Still haven't heard anyone "confirm" if there is a "panel" on the '06. Anyone?

How about on an 07 ?????

I can confirm that the 07 does not have that "handy dandy" access panel behind the windshield. And it appears that the 07 doesn't have the little black jumper either like the earlier FJR's have.

I've spend over an hour total on 2 occasions looking for that connector with the jumper wire and no luck. Doing some searching on this forum brought me to this post:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...shield++retract

which appears to address the issue for 07 bikes. I've handled that exact connector so many times that I should be married to it. But I ignored it because I was looking for a loopback jumper.

10 minutes after I get home today, I'll have that connector disconnected.

I've disconnected that little SOB on my '05 and on my '08, on a buddies '08 and, just today, on an '07. I forget where it was on the '05, but I know I didn't need to come in through the front. For the Gen II bikes, remove the two Right side panels (B and D?): three hex bolts and two quick release fasteners, plus the damn headlight adjustment cable. (Use a 17 mm socket for that one, after you've removed the tiny set screw in the knob.) Near the center of the bike you will find a big connector. That's not the one. Go futher inboard and slightly "behind" it -- that is, further towards the innards of the bike from where you are standing, but actually closer to the bike's front end -- and you will find a slightly smaller connector. Squeeze the far side of it and -- with a couple of cuss words -- it'll come apart. Like others have said, I've never seen a loop...just two separate parts of this connector. Turn on the key and move the windshield, turn off the key and see if it stays put. It did? Then you got the right connector! If not, put that one back together and keep trying.

BTW, I've never disconnected the battery for this and haven;t had a problem...so far. It is a GREAT mod!

Disconnected that sucker last night and it works like a charm. One difference in Yamaha's procedure for removing the C panel that I used is to leave the headlight knob installed. Once you remove the screw and rivet and pop the C panel loose, pull the panel rearward a little and reach behind and unscrew the knurled nut that holds the cable to the adjuster assembly. Then the C panel with knob still attached comes right off. Piece of cake!

I had looked for this connector several times and could not find it. I really hate the windshield auto retract since I make lots of short trips. I was looking for the "loop" oof wire on the connector. It just is not there on a Gen II bike. After I saw this post

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...shield++retract

I was able to find the connector immediately. It was under the larger connector shown but easy to find because I was not looking for a 2 wire connector---not a loop of wire.

By the way where can I get one of the little nuts that holds the headlight adjuster to the panel. I lost mine several months ago in a previous failed effort to find the connector. The parts guy at the local shop finds a big nut that is obviously wrong.

Who's the 'genius designer' who thought that the auto-retract is a great idea and left it on year after year? :)

I dunno, but I really like the "auto retract"and think it's cool. For those of you that are just real lazy or can't use your thumbs, guess you'd ***** about it....
