Been a while since I've posted here so here goes. I've got an 08 FJR ABS. Lately, I've noticed when the windshield goes either up or down it makes a horrible noise like its seriously in need of lubrication. My question, how big of a pain is it to get to the lube points for the retract mechanism? How much of the fairing do I need to remove? I googled this but couldn't find any specific answers to this. Anybody else have this problem? Thanks for the help!

The generally acknowledged problem is the rubber seals around the arms of the mechanism, not any issue with the mechanism itself. Though without seeing what you have going on I obviously can't say for sure. Some have removed the seals entirely. Some have lubed them. I'd make sure they are properly in place, and not binding, before I started tearing the front cowling apart.

same thing happens to me, but just in warmer weather. It just sorta vibrates on the way down. Didn't think it was all that big of a deal. Was thinking of just taking some the Royal Purple WD40 stuff in there and see what happens.. You do it first and let me know! hahaha

Hi Mike:

When you refer to the 'rubber seals around the arms...' are you referring the the rubber along the slots in the fairing?

My 2010 is experiencing the same problem and lubing the slider mechanism through the rubber shrouded slots plus lubing the rubbers along the slots has had no positive effects.

Is there somewhere else that should be lubed?

Thanks,

Dale

P.S. The Yamaha tech people here in Canada claim to have never heard of the problem.

Yes, the rubber seals in the fairing slots.

Mine just started doing the noise thing when it goes back down. It actually started after my cross country trip. I thought it was just in need of lube, since the bike had gone through lots of rain and sunshine. Kinda funny though, since you'd think it would be engineered to last much longer than 6 months =)

I'll have to take mine in and see what the local techs say about it.

If you guys do find a solution other than disabling the auto retract, please post it up =)

I like the auto retract- Without it bike looks like a one eyed guy on a nude beach.

Guys,

I had the same thing happen to my 08. It was still under warranty, so I took it to the dealer. As it turns out, the rail slider arms were bent.

The tech said they have seen this problem often with bikes that have the larger windscreens on them. I had purchased the taller screen from the accessories catalog. Yamaha is aware of this issue and has a beefed up windscreen slider support kit.

Anyhoo, Yamaha sent all new windscreen hardware including much beefier (saw it personally)slider arms and support bushings that can better withstand the stress of the larger windscreens.

It's been about a year since the repairs were done and it still glides smooth as silk. Call your dealer about this. Or if you like, pm me and I'll put you in touch with mine. They can get you the skinny on the upgraded slider arms and bushings.

Cheers!

Very good to know... Next time I'm at my dealer I'll inquire. Do you happen to know the part number?

I am glad to hear that Yamaha has a fix for the problem that addresses the hardware issue. The explanation above makes a lot of sense :thumbsupsmiley: . I have been using big windshields since my o7 was new and have had the problem on and off.

With my bike the noise and shuddering with retracting/extension was worse when the windshield had been used more, say testing a windshield for height or adjusting up and down a lot for stop and go in hot weather on a long trip. It was weird in that it would fix itself given time light use. When i took my fairing off for another repair I cleaned and lubed the tracks and it has not caused me any problems over the last 4000 years.

Don't actually have a solution but may have at least a temporary fix.

My dealer sprayed a variety of lubes on the sliding mechanism, through the slots in the fairing, to no avail.

However, I tried a similar procedure using a white silicone grease (the type which sprays on and then thickens into a white grease) and the noise disappeared, at least for now.

Like you, I would have expected Yamaha to have provided a much better mechanism/procedure for smooth window tracking.

Hopefully, someone will come up with something more permanent as I don't know how permanent my 'fix' is.

FWIW,

Dale

I had the same issue, also using the Yamaha Touring screen. I had most of the plastics off to repair a hole in the header (thanks to a rouge rock) and decided to pull the nose piece off to investigate. I tried lithium grease and everything else I could find but it still was an issue, until I realized that I was testing it with no shield on or the top bracket. Apparently that top bracket keeps the sliders in proper alignment because after I reattached that and started testing again it was OK with the lithium grease. I tried to take it to the dealer for warranty but both dealers I could go to locally were going to keep the bike for 2 weeks and I wasn't a fan of that. All that to say that the other day, about 4,000 miles after I did that it started doing it again.

I will have to talk to a dealer over winter and see if Y.E.S. will cover it since I am now under that coverage and get them to replace with the heavier sliders.

Just adding my ditto for the 09! Been doing it since I added the Yamaha touring screen. Tried lubes and helped breifly. Glad to know Yamha will fix it. Now I just need to remember next time I go in for service. I never have anything to complain about. My dealer checks every issue at every serice. 12,000 miles and all is good.

So this is not the windshield upgrade that happened in I forget what model year? This is in fact something separate from that?
