Does anyone know the actual thread size and pitch for the stock screws? Length? I want to replace the phillips head with something a little more durable. Thanks,

FJReady

Yup, I know that-- I'll stay with nylon, just want different head style. I guess I could pull one an measure it, but the phillips recess is good for about one removal and install. I want to swap back to stock shield for the warm weather and don't need to deal with the crappy OEM screw head.

10-24. They be amerikan. Though the 5's may work, even be the same. Screws from Ace in a 10-24 fit.

Radman:

I thought I had tripped on that some time ago farkling and you got my curiosity up. So I just walked out to the shop, got my trusty Sears Craftsman thread sizing gauge out and measured one of them. They are 10's, but they are 10-32.

10-32 it is. It was late last year that I was playing around looking for a reliable, inexpensive source for replacements. It was then that I found the nuts were Well-Nuts brand, and they are easy to find. The only screws I found were white however.

Blue Wing:

Put yer windshield back on, this'll work. (some guys, however, like riding without their shields).

Here's a 10-32 SAE nut on a 5 x 0.8mm plastic windshield screw. There is absolutely no friction. They're completely compatabile.

If this pic works, it'll be a first. My apologies to Joos for posting pics on his site, even though they're FJR specific.

Thanks for all the info. I have to beleive that the 5mm x 0.8 pitch is the right size. I can't imagine that it is truly a 10-32. (the only non metric screw on the bike?) However if you do the math the 10-32 is pretty darn close.

screw ** O.D. (in) ** threads/inch

5 mm ** 0.197 ** 31.7

#10-32 ** 0.190 ** 32

So I can see where a 10-32 would fit but you wouldn't have full thread engagement. But probably quite sufficient. Good to know if/when you lose a OEM screw.
