When I was in law enforcement, I always seemed to be in the right place and the right time. An example would be seeing a robbery in progress and only having to step out of my patrol vehicle to make the apprehension, recovering a stolen vehicle before it's been reported stolen and other similar situations. Now that I'm out of law enforcement, I seem to still show up in the right place at the right time or now as I say… wrong place, wrong time.
Tonight I had just finished dinner at Chili's and was driving south on a road that parallels the freeway... at a place where the freeway is about ten feet higher than the parallel road and about ten feet away... when I see a vehicle loose control on the freeway, do a barrel roll through the air and come down in my lane, striking the truck in front of me.
After parking my truck in the road to block the lane, I ran around the side of the vehicle that had rolled to find a female hanging out of the back window. She’s hysterical and trying to get out of the vehicle. As I’m trying to calm her down, a volunteer firefighter comes up behind me. Because she wasn’t calming down, we assisted her in getting out of the rear window and we placed her in the bed of my pickup. (Oh, I forgot to mention it’s pouring ran and she’s bleeding everywhere.) While waiting for emergency crews to arrive, I held her C-Spine while the volunteer firefighter and another person talked to her and checked her injuries.
Long story, short version… this accident could have been avoided by common sense! It was raining extremely hard at the time and based on how far the vehicle slid on its side, the driver was going well over the posted speed limit and way too fast for the conditions. (Oh, I also forgot to mention, this area of the freeway is a work-zone and the posted speed limit is 45 MPH. Based on my initial observations, the vehicle was traveling at least 60 MPH.)
After leaving the scene, I realize my jeans are covered in blood and when I get home I find part of the headlight assembly sticking out of my tire. (I had pulled my truck up into the accident scene so we could place the injured passenger in the bed until emergency crews arrived.) Did I mention the fact that I was covered in the girls blood? So know I have to wonder what diseases this girl might have had.
Not much to this post… I just felt like getting things off my chest because my wife is out of town and I don’t have her help me de-stress.
NOTE: My avatar picture was staged to give my wife a headache; I always ride with a helmet.
