I have an early build 2003 (serial # ends in 411). The other day I saw a thread mentioning that there were some center stands that failed and found it was an issue with only 03s. (Yes even though I am new, I have taken the hint about using Google to search the forum). If someone has a center stand from a bike that the insurance totaled or knows of where I can find one cheap before I check flea bay let me know. I did at least get my R&G frame sliders installed on Friday, so this would help if the stand failed but I would rather not try them out if I can help it.

I did try to see if there is a fix for the 2003 center stands in the forum (again, I know Google is my friend) but did not find one under center stand fix site:fjrforum.com.

I work for a company that has a full metal fabrication shop (sheet metal, weld, paint, CNC machines, ect.) but I don't have a stand to compare to so as to let them know what to gusset / fix / repair / stregthen. Anyone know of any good pics where someone did fix their stand ?

Not to discourage someone from helping you out with that information but you may just consider checking the center stand periodically. I've had my '03 since the end of '02 and my center stand is just fine. I've only spun the bike around on the center stand once or twice though. Usually, I just use it as it was intended.

Meosborn,

I too only try to use it as intended, but I bougth the bike used and don't know how it was treated all it's life (only had 6900 miles when I bought). I do need to get down and check the center stand better. I usually use it at work that would be near something it would fall over on (other bikes, fence, ect.) Since I spent $110.00 on sliders, if i have to spend 70 - 100 on a used stand that would give me peace of mind that it would not be prone to possibly fail I think it would be worth it to me. The bike came with a few scratches on the right side already, probably from a tip over or something brushed up against it. Just trying to avoid broken mirror mount, more scratched up fairing panels / saddle bags. From what I can tell, those items would be way more than 70 - 100 bucks.

Well, this is not looking good. I have even tried to e-mail a few salvage yards in the Houston area and did not get a response from either one of them. It looks like if I really want one I'm going to have to pony up a few more $$$'s than I had hoped to feel more secure about the center stand and buy a NOS part.

Could someone maybe take a picture of their center stand and post it here so that I can compare the extra bracing compared to mine ? Maybe I could get the guys at work to fix mine up a bit in our Metal fabrication department.

I think?, MamaYama's "fix" was heavier gauge tubing (greater wall-thickness) -- so, not much help...?(maybe?).

I asked my machinist about this (told him what gauge was used) and he said that the original tubing was plenty stout for the intended purpose.

I agree with the comments of 'meosborn': inspect and use as directed (no "ride-offs", etc.).
