Anybody have a used meter they want to sell? I keep looking at their website, but I'm choking on spending $60+ for a two wire volt meter.

Thanks..Barry :)

I saw those, I just thought they'd be junky.

What does everyone use? I have a show chrome 5 function meter (time-temp-volts-and some dummy lights). It's pretty junky, volt meter is 3 to 4 tenths pessimistic (12.8 volts reads as 12.3 or 4), and it ain't waterproof by any stretch of the imagination.

So, being a cheap bastage, I thought I'd look for a used datel.

That's my story.

See, here's the thing: You can go out and find some cheaper voltmeter, but then it won't be completely encapsulated and hermetically sealed. It won't have been tested by literally thousands of murdercycle riders with no reports of failures or inaccuracies, and on the one day when your alternator takes a dump (which HAS been reported to happen fairly regularly) your voltmeter won't do its job.

And then you can replace that cheap-o voltmmeter with another, and another...

Or you can spend $60 once.

If it were me I would look at it this way: Either spend the money to get a good panel voltmeter that you can trust, or else just skip it. Because in my mind no information is often better than bad information.

By the way, they are only $50 here: click me You want the red LED model DMS-20PC-1-DCM. 1/10 volt accuracy is plenty good enough and red for night vision retention. Skip the bezel and mount it like this:

Cyclemaxohio.com has them (identical to Datel and may just be one) for $24. I've had one on my last 3 bikes no issue whatsoever.

Are you sure? I found what l;ooks like a datel, but is a panel thermometer for that price. But no voltmemeters.

I need (another) one for my Trophy

panel thermometer
sorry for the hi-jack ...but who makes a panel digital thermometer? ...and does it have a remote sensor?

A waterproof volt meter for $23.00 I'll try that.

Watch, by the time I finish fukin around I'll have spent more on various meters than I would have spent if I just bought the Datel. Love it.

Thanx

"See, here's the thing: You can go out and find some cheaper voltmeter, but then it won't be completely encapsulated and hermetically sealed."

Au contraire, my supposedly "sealed" Datel took on water just this past weekend after about 75 miles of riding in the rain and started reading 17-35V.

After spending the night wrapped in aluminum foil with a night light bulb it seems to have recovered.

I'm doing my own potting on top of theirs, count me unimpressed at the $50+ level. ;)

This is a first.

Was there any apparent break in the potting on yours? I've looked closely at mine (I have 2, one in FJR and one in VFR) during the installs and they are completely sealed from the elements. I know that their spec sheet only says splash-proof, but I take that to mean they just never went through the rigors of testing to some higher standard of waterproof-ness.

Thanks for the link to the cheap Voltmeter. I'll put a couple on order.

I wish I could make that cheap temp gauge work to display coolant temp (on the Trophy) but the max temp display is 140F, intended to just show ambient air temps.

The gray potting they used on mine doesn't adhere real well to the red plastic case, if you look closely it pulls away making for a seam gap.

Here's hoping that this gooped over the back on top of the gray crap and over the terminal screws too keeps me from a 17V heeby jeeby reading while riding. :ermm:

Others beat me to posting links cuz I was busy buying the Voltmeter! $29 delivered to Canada! :yahoo:
Me too... looks like another farkle party is coming up...

:)
The cyclemax meter came in today. It looks awsome. Nicely sealed, looks exactly like the datel and about 1/2 the price ($27 direct).

Very impressed...can't wait to install!!!

+1 - This thing looks identical to a $50 Datel.

I bought two of 'em. Not sure where I'll use the 2nd one yet, but at that price... If you ever thought about installing a panel meter this looks like the way to go.
