Would pay top dollar (as long as it's a lot less than a new one) for somebody's stripped oil pan that they just had to replace.

I have the opportunity to play with RECOILS, HELICOILS, and TIME CERTS and if I like the finish product may put the pan in service.

I'm not too smart/good with metal.

I have never had to use a Helicoil until two weeks ago. The PO of my TLR, stripped out the oil plug. I bought a kit from Carquest and went at it. I let all the oil drain out and then greased up the flutes on the tap.

The tap is stepped. Meaning the first set of threads is the same size as the old thread. This gives you a guide. Then the second set of threads are oversized for the Helicoil.

I poured some oil through the bike and flushed out the shavings. I let it sit another day just so all the oil was out of it. I cleaned the new threads with some lacquer thinner. I wrapped my new drain plug with Teflon tape and threaded the new insert onto it. I put red Locktite on the outside diameter of the insert and threaded it into the new hole. I let it cure for another day and put the oil back in. NO LEAKS!!!

It was really very easy. I used Teflon tape on the plug so that there was no chance of getting Locktite on it and the thing freezing into the new plug. Don't spend the money on another pan. If I fix mine, so can you.

Well more to the story than that. If you ever put a time sert in and don't go far enough. . . Well it doesn't lock. Oops. My hole is getting big (so to speak). So that's why I want a stripped oil pan, put an insert in properly, etc.

Begin ridicule
