Took the FJR out for a ride last night after work, weather in the low 80,s calm winds, in short, perfect riding weather. After about an hour, stopped in to a local bar in a small town with decent food and got a beer, 1 beer, not more, and ordered a sandwich. Lots of bikes at this place, about 20 HD's or so and 1 goldwing. Struck up a converstion with some of the locals and as it turns out, all were there on their HD's. I am thinking ok, sounds cool. Talking about riding and the subject comes up about how many miles people ride per year. The 3 people I am talking to, say they ride to a couple of different bars on a semi regular weekly basis and maybe put 30 miles per week on their rides. When I told them I bought my bike in January this year, and had about 1100 miles on the odo, they cold not believe how much I ride. I never considered myself all that much of a high miles rider. A little more conversation revealed that these guys all paid over 20K for their rides. One guy was proud of the fact that he had a 97 springer softail custom with only 18K on the odo.

I know that their are people on this forum that have or have had HD's. Is this lack of wanting to ride an HD thing or what? Why would you spend so much on a bike and not want to ride? Just askin, seems weird to me.

I guess different strokes for different folks. If you spend that kind of money on a ride, I figure you have the right to ride it as little or as much as you want. I commute about 300 miles a week, some here in the office think I'm nutz...some days I kinda agree. But it's what puts a smile on my face every time I swing my leg over that seat. There was a time when shiny chrome and sparkling paint was more important to me than miles on the road. The common denominator between you and the others in that bar was that when all of you left, you all did it on two wheels...ok, maybe three.

So is it weird, maybe. But there's a lot of weird to go around...just spend a little time on this board. :)

That would be a grat question to put to all of us on the forum who have bought/sold FJRs with extremely low milage with plenty of farkles. :dribble:

Theirs a local guy here in town that bought a deuce a few years back (along with 1000zx). I see the guy a couple times a year but not anymore than that.

So last year I'm yacking with him and find out the Duece has less than a 1000 *kilometers* on it. Mind you he's spent about $5G's on aftermarket bling for it in that time and talks like he's ridden it around the world 6 times in the past year.

We all know what he is.

He asked how many miles I have on the FJR (we had bought the bikes about a week apart). 140,000km.

His reply.. "So I guess your in the market to upgrade to an HD now"

What do you say to something like that. I chose the nothing response. Simply because if he had said anything after that I would've punched him in the beak.

It's a free country & people can ride what they want and as little or as much as they want...that being said...your HD encounter just strengthens the stereotype about many of them. Many are nothing but glorified local bar riders. But of course I know a HD guy that has well over 50,000 miles on his 2007 Sportster 1200 and he rides the crap out of it. So like all stereotypes there are plenty exceptions to the rule.

There are bar riders, there are weekend riders and there are full time 7 days a week riders. I'm more of a weekend rider myself. Usually do a good 10,000-12,000 miles a year is all. Riding to me is all about pleasure and not just simply commuting.

To me a decent day ride is anywhere from 250 - 500 miles depending on the amount of stops I want to make if I'm sightseeing, hiking, photographing etc as well. I know to some HD riders a 100 mile day ride is extreme and not something they hardly ever do.

Then you got the LD riders that do 1,000 or 1,500 miles in 24hrs.

Some ride to chew up miles, some ride to see & explore new places and some ride down to the corner to get hammered at the bar. It's all about what you enjoy and it's all relative!

We have lots of bar hoppers in northern Illinois. You ride the main streets of the little towns and every bar has atleast a couple of HDs in front of it.

Now not every HD rider is like that...but almost everyone around me is that way...so it's hard not to generalize sometimes.

However, I generally don't get into pecker measuring contests. I'm not into the "I'm better than you" kind of thing. As long as they aren't running in packs of 15 at 5 below the limit, nuts to butts, then I won't be pissed at them.

However, if they are going to be so inconsiderate as to block the public roads like that...then I get kinda impatient and it's best not to do what I do.

There are two types of Harley OWNERS; those that ride, and those that purely purchase the image. I guess also, there are those that are a bit of a combo of both those ideologies.

I don't see them as inherantly wrong or stupid. To me, I don't care what you ride, just that you ride. Aside from that? Make model etc etc? It's no big thing.

So many folks get caught up in the bike snob thing on here, and elsewhere..........to me, that's really unfortunate.

There are great people on two wheels everywhere. You just gotta look past the sterotypes, start talking and get to know them. It's funny how fast the differences melt away.

My 2 cents, (for what that's worth in CDN $'s)

:)

PS. Am guessing if the bike(s) in question were a $35,000 Aprilla there wouldn't be a post like this. Just a guess ;)

Let me tell you about riding in the Black Hills anytime close to the beginning of August.

I have passed caravans of dozens, and I have to admit I didn't think you could ride a bike through curves without leaning it, but these guys do consistently prove me wrong.

On the other hand, I know this nutjob on a Sportster...

Here I go again. What the hell was wrong with the OP's post? Anybody?

Somebody--TWO of you, in fact--decided to "minus" his post. Why? Guy's been on the forum for two months, and his "rep" is now at minus two. (I left it alone and didn't nullify one of them to bring it "up" to -1, something I often do, just so you could all see the ugly red "-2" below the post.) I've seen quite a few of these really pointless and ******** negative votes around here lately, and it just pisses me off that somebody can anonymously sucker-punch some fairly innocuous post like this one. I wish the forum would get rid of this damn feature. :angry2:

I've always found the easiest way to determine if a guy is a bar hopping biker is to look and see if the trailer he uses to trailer the bike around has about 10 times more miles on it than the bike does...

Well, I can see that my post pissed some people off, as the negative 2 indicates. I do not hate Harley guys, I just assumed people liked to ride them just as much as anyone like to ride anything. I will drop off.

I don't see a thing wrong with the OP posts. Its a legitimate post/observation/question he raises. Some people around here get their panties all up in a wad over nothing IMO! He's not bashing anybody and he's not argumentative. So what's the problem???

NEPRT crap about Harleys to begin with...and the seemingly inevitable divisive threads that spin off as a result.

The number one sentence about this forum is still true.

This forum is to discuss the Yamaha FJR1300 and the issues surrounding the FJR1300 community.

OK, the "minus" wasn't from me, Ig.

Of course, now he's at "plus 2," so the point of my first post is lost.

*edit* LOL. You'd need a scorecard to make sense of the changes in this thread. OP Brent started out rated by his fellow-FJR Forum members at a -2. Now he's at +5. Ig's post, above, had a -1 when I first saw it. Now it's neutral. So far, I haven't had any minuses (or plusses), but that could change any second. And Beemerdons gets an A in English.
