My father flew a few missions over occupied Italy in 1944. He was a tail gunner in a B17. One day the gunner for the belly turret asked him if they could trade places. He said he was feeling sick to his stomach and thought the tail gunner position would be a little easier. They did so, and that day the tail end of the plane got shot up pretty bad. The fella who took dad's place on that mission died that day. I've often wondered about that...

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I've always had the utmost admiration for the B17 and B24 crews that flew unescorted missions over Germany in 1943.
