I have just been looking the cost of new Yamaha FJR1300's here in New Zealand so here's some useless information for you. I see a 2009 " run out" model as we call it here with less than 500 miles at $24,000 NZ dollars. Lets see...converted to US dollars that makes that bike $19700.

Next is a Brand new FJR1300 2013 model with zero miles on the clock. That bike here today is $26,999. Converted to US makes it a cool $22,163 at todays rate.

And finally after talking to my Yamaha dealer today about the all new 2014 FJR1300ES which I was getting rather excited about the purchase of, he tells me that that bike, due here in April, is going to be another 5 grand on top of the 2013 model price. Let's see now.$26,999 plus the extra 5, so that makes the latest model a whopping $31,999 converted to US equals $26,227. Kind of puts me off Mr Yamaha really when I look at prices in the States. No wonder I am buying all my spare parts for the Gen 1 from the US. Someone is definitely taking a good cut on the way through here in New Zealand wether it's Yamaha, the government , or the dealers themselves.

Oh well....**** happens

Go to your NZ Yamaha site and post them off the question.

I did exactly the same here, directing them to their own FJR price on their web site and those off the USA Yamaha website.

Over $10,000 AUD difference in price. (That's when the Aussie $ equalled 1.05 USD)

They couldn't really give a good explanation why, except the "supply and demand" theory.

They had no explanation why our OEM parts are 4 times that of the USA.

You'll just have to import one in pieces from the USA lol lol !!!!

PS they said the new ES model will be an extra $5,000 on top of the current RRP and THAT'S if they decide to import them.

I'm sure the Australian ACCC would have a field day "Please Explain" to Mr Yamaha

So give it a try. Hire a couple of us to buy you one, we'll take it apart and send it to you for reassembly. You'll get it for a fraction of the cost. If it's indeed legal, you'll be a happy camper.

The trick is to just not build it in the first place. This is how FJRs arrive to the dealer:

For comparison, UK 2014 prices:

FJR1300A £13699 ($22403 US*)

FJR1300AE £14499 ($23712 US)

FJR1300AS £15399 ($25188 US)

Prices include delivery to dealer, pre-delivery assembly and inspection, number plates, petrol and VAT (Value Added Tax) at 20%. On top there will be a first registration fee and vehicle excise duty (around £150).

* Conversion as of 16:40 GMT, 20/12/2013

Well, Without doing the math the best way around this would be to take a holiday in the US, make the purchase while there, organise the shipping back home, and pick it up in Auckland NZ. So then we've got GST of 15% to pay and of course (goods and services tax that is) to the Government. Yeah another rip off. And thats pretty much it i guess. I might just crunch the numbers later.

Gazza,

You would have to really check out the NZ Government's requirements.

A mate moved over from the USA and imported his 05 with him.

He had soo many problems, government red tape, associated bills and impoundment storage fees, cleaning fees, he honestly said he'd never do it again.

The bike had to valued to the Australian market, then GST paid on that, then a international RWC / compliance done.

And for an Aussie, must have owned it for 2 years before he can import it. The bike was in his Australian wife's name.

The other way is to bring it over in pieces or talk to people who buy & ship bikes.

When I was in New Zealand the owners of the TourNZ bought most of the bikes in their fleet used in the States and then shipped them back to New Zealand. I have no idea if the rules have changed since then (2009).

Wheatie - You may have a problem finding a FJR to rent. When I first looked into renting for my trip TourNZ was the only New Zealand tour company that listed a FJR in their rental fleet. It was no longer available when I went and was told they sold it off due to a lack of interest in their customer base in renting the FJR. Most of their fleet was BMW's and Hondas. They did have a KTM 990 Adventure for weirdos like me but most of their customer base comes from the older touring crowd.

Think about this: how far is it from Japan to Florida? Then how far is it from Japan to New Zealand? Us Florida boys ought to be the ones paying the big bucks. Life ain't fair sometimes.

Yeah, understand a lot of research would have to be done to make this happen, and be viable of course. Thanks all for the input. Much appreciated. I guess we should be lucky with what we've got down here.
