The lock on one of my saddlebags has gone to hell, meaning it just spins. A close inspection reveals a screw of some sort holding the parts that pivot, and that requires an allen wrench or star tool of some sort. Nothing I have in my garage fits. I'm going for an overnight later this week to Yosemite, and just need to know what to ask for at the hardware store.

Help!

That would be your T-10 Torx Security Bit. You can go to Sears and find that the only way to get one is to buy a gimillion other bits in a kit at the same time. I got a nice kit with well over eleventy assorted bits that I'll never, ever use for right around 30 bucks.

You may consider some other purchases while your wallet is open. For instance, rather than replace the lost screw with identical ones from Yamaha, you might buy alternative screws of the same size and pitch with a more common head, say an Allen head. Also, a little Blue Locktite (the faster Locktite) should be used on all the lock screws on both sides of the bike.

This is coming up a lot lately. Happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I used long nose pliers to remove the security screws and replaced them with 3mm x 8mm (2mm longer) hex head screws and blue threadlock. Works great.

Harbour Freight is the place to go for things like this - cheap! It's not like your going to put 300 ft/lbs of torque on that anyway, so cheap is the way to go especially for tools that will only be used once-in-awhile like this and don't require much precision like a torque wrench. Get that at sears.

I went to Sears, but didn't want to waste money on a full set of securtity Torx® sockets so I went to my local Fastenal. They found something that works better for me and cost me about 4 bucks. I had to wait a couple of days for it to arrive, but I don't remember having to pay shipping.

I have a screwdriver that accepts 1/4" bits and I can store the bit in the handle.

If you don't have a Fastenal near you, try MSC. Here's the link to the page in their catalog: page 2246 The item your looking for is the 1/4 In. Hex Shank Torx Tamper-Resistant Bit Torx Size: T10 Item #64470198 is the middle ground price-wise and is less than 5 bucks.

I would also search for Loctite that is safe for plastic. I don't know what type of plastic Yamaha makes their cases out of, but I've heard that Loctite can cause them to crack.

My Harbor Freight security bit set arrived yesterday, so I used the correct bit to add lock tight to those screws. Seems like Yamaha may be using some form of locktight on the 07s, as they seemed to "pop" a bit as I applied tension, and there is a little coller of a clear something at the top of the threads.

Don't you count on it. It may have changed, but the locks come in a package under the seat & the side cases are shipped separately. It's not Yamaha but the dealer who installs the locks & a lot of them don't read the side case instruction book ( you did get that instruction book also, didn't you?) where it says to use thread locker on the lock screws. What I like is Yamaha's idea of using security screws in a location that you can only get to if you have the KEY. Hmmm, securely secured.

Later,,, De
