Yamaha Top Box Help

Hi Folks

i just picked up a top box for my 05 FJR and it didnt come with any instructions. i have 2 long bolts and 2 spacers that i am not sure what to do with.

I just found a link that says i am supposed to drill 2 20mm holes in the plastic and there should be nuts already underneath is this correct?

This was once well covered here but now it seems to be lost after the great hack attack.

Yes, you have to drill two holes for the stand-offs. When the rear seat is removed you will see two threaded holes that the long bolts will screw into. Most people recommend a uni-bit to drill the holes. It would be good to cover the area where you are going to drill with masking tape. The tape serves two purposes, first it helps reduce the chance that the plastic will chip as you drill, and secondly, provides an area for you to mark on as you try to locate the drill target. Most people drill a small pilot hole to check actual accuracy before committing to drilling the big hole. I measured and measured and measured, held my breath and hoped the force was with me and drilled both holes on target. Whew!

You can find a "How To" over on the MicaPeak site here. It is easy to do a neater job with the holes than shown in this how-to.

The downward pointing arrow shows the stand-off coming through the plastic. The upward arrow shows the stand-off sitting over the threaded hole.

The next photo shows both stand-offs.

Thanks Alan that was a huge help, was just a bit nervous about drilling my nice shiny new (to me) bike. Now its all done and it feels much more rigid.

now there is no chance i will lose the wife of the back.
