YES warranty

Hello,

New guy here and soon to be FJR owner. I have a deposit on 06 1300A. I am adding it to my stable to become my solo LD rally bike.

I have question about Yamaha's YES warranty program. While looking thru the archives on this site I came across the following information:

"YES Warranty

While I generally think extended warranties are a scam, this factory offered program is the exception. GET IT! It's very cheap for the coverage. $389 from D&H Cycle, 18115 US Hwy 31, Cullman, AL 35058, 256-739-1840, 888-553-3311

YES coverage can be bought from one dealer and apply to any other dealer fairly easily.

The one exception are Florida residents. That state is totally screwed up and passed a law that residents can only get insurance from in-state agents. They must have a good lobbyist."

I am a Florida resident and coincidently I am getting my bike from the dealer named above. D&H did not hesitate to include the YES warranty in the deal. Can someone explain if the warranty will be valid.

My opinion here (this and a $1.25 will get you a cup of coffee, but not at Starbucks),

if you can get it in Alabama for $389, it's gonna be hard for anyone to say you bought it outside of Florida, as YES is a 50-state warranty(edit: maybe a 49 or 48 state warranty, I've heard that Yamaha NA does not cover Hawaii, at least), no specific-state flavors that I'm aware of. Once you have it, it likely will not be questioned where you got it. If I were in your shoes I would buy it from D&H. YMMV, I am not a Fla resident, all the usual disclaimers, etc., etc. Probably the only ones that care work in the Florida state insurance commission, and likely they're trying to curb mail and web purchases they cannot regulate, but I could be wrong...

You might call up a dealer in Florida (not the one you hope to use) and say you need something fixed under YES and pulse them to see if they ask where you got it. Or just ask them straight up and see what happens.

...or move to a state where graft, corruption, and mob lobbyists don't run amok quite so much.... :blink:

Yea, this Florida warrentee thing has come up here a few times, and it'd be good to get an actual attempt to use an out-of-state warrentee and see what happens. What if you have YES while you lived in, say, Alabama, and just moved to Florida? What if you live out of state, and are just visiting Florida and need warentee work done?

Just seems like there might be some FUD being spread by in-state people trying to sell warentees?

Call away, but because the YES compensation is payed by Yamaha USA, and because the Florida dealer never sees your bill of sale for the YES program, how would they even know? All they do is check the Yamaha master computer for the coverage status and then do the work.

What if you bought a bike with YES from someone in Georgia and rode it to Florida and registered it there? Do you REALLY think that Yamaha gets off the hook because NOW it's a Florida bike with a warranty purchased in another state?

You guys are obsessing over trivia. I wouldn't waste my time. Just buy it with the bike (at least they don't force you to buy the machine from a Florida dealer) and leave it at that.

Spend the money you save on sales tax for the program into a spare headlight bulb or two (because you DID get them to put the warranty on a separate invoice, didn't you?) .

Just talked to my sales dude on purchasing the YES program with the bike. He said no problem and that he has it on all his bikes. He includes it on the same invoice with the bike. Am I missing something here? I am in central FL.

After all, either D&H will get your money, or the local guy will, but clearly even D&H is making enough profit on the warranty to be able to sell it for $389. Now, I bought my bike from a local guy because D&H didn't have any A's available (and I didn't decide to get the bike until the PDP was over), so the dealer I used agreed to sell me the warranty for D&H's price. If you can find a local dealer who will match, then that avoids all questions as to where you bought it. Just a thought.

I got 48 months for $389; this is in addition to the original 12-month warranty, giving me a 5-year warranty. I believe others who used D&H's price got the same deal.

Exactly. Thats what I learned when I called Yamaha and a local dealer. If, and this of course is not the case, the extended warranty was issused by a third party it would be subject to validation. As I said, this is not the case butt it was is some states on third party polices that certain BMW dealer brokered a while back. Perhaps that is the reason everyone (me) wants to know the real deal on the warranty program.

Consider this--on my 2002 Triumph Thunderbird, I had to replace a water pump on my tour last year--had a part drop-shipped to Denver, lucky for me I had a pal in Boulder with a good garage so I could do the job myself. The part alone cost me $398; had I had an extended warranty, it would have paid for itself right there. On top of that, I've replaced failing spark plug wires and had to have a starter motor rebuilt--about $110 in those two jobs alone. And the Triumph manual (even the Haynes) indicates that Triumph does not stock parts to rebuild the starter--if I didn't have such an awesome (and honest) mechanic, I could have been charged $600 (you read that right) for a new starter from Triumph. If you ride, really ride, an unlimited-mile 5-year warranty can be a fantastic thing. $389 is downright cheap for good insurance! And if you have a 'ticker'? Want to pay for a new head?

FWIW: I bought my 4 year Y.E.S. from the same shop I got my '06 at: North End Cycle, Elkhart, IN. When I asked the owner, Byron, if I had to buy it from a shop in Al he sold it for $369.00, $20 UNDER D+H. He also said he would do the same for other FJR owners.
