I've been running without the bags lately and enjoying some extra "sportiness". Naturally I got sick of hauling my helmet with me everywhere I went so I looked at FJReady, Headude and Lester from Tampa's posts. I picked up a short (20") bicycle seat cable at REI for about $5 and finally figured out how to use it without a lock, carabiner or bending tin. I'm a bit dense so it took me a while to figure out that the big loop should go through the small loop. The big loop can then go over one of the posts on the passenger seat and keep it secure. Just keep a little tension on the cable as you put the seat back and it works pretty well. Mine's an '06 but I can't imagine that it wouldn't work with a Gen I machine.

The cable is coated so it won't scratch and stores easily under the seat. I assume a longer one would secure a second helmet or a jacket (or perhaps a mother-in-law).
