Hi everyone.

This is not a typical ride report. I'm not sure where to put this but I just wanted to share. I hope this is the right place for it. Mods, sorry if it's not.

It's been a while since I posted here. I have sold my FJR. I thought it would be easy, but when the day came to hand over the bike to it's new owner, I became very emotional. It was, after all, my first bike. So I thought I'd share some memories I had with it.

On January 16, 2010, I took delivery of this baby

It was quite a big decision for me, to want to own this bike. I had zero riding experience. I only knew how to ride bicycles at the time and I had this childhood dream of wanting to ride. I recall it was from watching 'Fast' Freddie Spencer clinch both the 250 and 500 GP back in the 80s that made the idea stick in my mind. Fast forward to 2010, and at age 38, I walked into the biggest superbike showroom in south east asia and pointed to the biggest, baddest bike on the floor and told the sales guy,"That one. I want that one." And so I became the proud owner of a new 2008 FJR1300.

I loved this bike to bits... even though I dropped it at the showroom, the very day I got it.

It took me to all kinds of places.

The nation's administrative centre, Putrajaya. This was the very next day, after taking it home.

On the west coast of the peninsula, with new found FJR friend, Griffin (also on this forum). Griffin's bike is on the left.

It took me across the mountain range, where I discovered that deep in the forest, there was this resort..

...which was made famous for the wild elephants that roamed the area. There's nothing between me and this elephant. Just the grass.

The bike got me into trouble with the cops on more than one occasion

But I think what I liked most was that it got me and my wife closer. I loved having my wife with me on rides and I loved talking to her while we were on the bike (we used a pair of Sena SMH10).

Here's a good shot of my wife taking a pic using my DSLR as we rode around the Penang Island. You can see her in the side mirror

The other thing was that I got to meet people from all over the world. All the people I know on this forum, I would not have met had it not been for this bike. And I'm honored to know all of you. Plus, I did some photography work for a local bike tour company for the 3 years I owned the FJR. I rode with them on all their tours and documented each tour in pictures. Here are a handful.

He had visited us so many times that he invited me up to his home in France to ride with him. And we've done this every year now. The first to the south of France, the second year to Croatia. And this past May, I went with him again to Spain (the pics are still in my disc - I've not done a RR yet on this one). Just a couple of pics from some of these rides:

Along the Adriatic coast in Croatia. Here I'm piloting the same gold Busa that used in the pic above. He shipped this bike back home to France, having bought it in Singapore. This pic, courtesy of my wife shooting one handed.

It was a sad day for me when I had to hand the keys over to the new owner. My FJR was special to me. It had created so many special memories. These were some of the last pics I took of the bike. I had never really taken any posed shots of my FJR and since I was about to hand over the keys, I decided to pose her for some glamour shots.

Goodbye old friend. I shall never forget you, for you were my first.

Of course, I am not done with riding. Just over a month after handing her over to her new owner, I took delivery of this.

I haven't done any real long distance rides, and will probably not do very many of those. I bought this R1 specifically for track days. But I may occasionally go out and do a ride, maybe once or twice a year. When I do, I'll put up an RR, as usual.

As always, thanks for looking and have a great week ahead.

Best.

Nik.

Hey Nik,

Thanks for that! I remember a lot of those photos...

Glad you got a bike that you enjoy...

...and don't be a stranger! We love your photo essays...

We have missed your RR's Nik. Please keep coming here and keep posting your great pictures and reports!
We were actually just talking about you a couple of weeks ago when I was up in the PNW area on my 2-week ride. Was wondering where you had been as I really enjoy your RRs and photographs! While letting go of your first is emotional, I'm sure the memories you create with your new "girlfriend" will be just as special in a different way. Please do keep posting and sharing!! B)

Very CLEAR, sharp pics, nice R1.........wouldn't mind picking up a used FZ1 for myself someday.

I bet the Wife isn't as happy on the back of that R1 as the FJR!!

Hi Nik,

I shared your sadness, right up to you taking delivery of your new ride. Truly a great Ride Report. All the best for great travels in the future.

Best regards

Surly

Going to miss the RR's with the FJR Nik!

Looking forward to your adventures with the R1...keep us posted, k?

Gunny. Always loved your special gift and photo perspectives, and hope we continue to hear from you.

The FJR was my return to riding after ten years absence, and while it started being all about the bike, it has now become all about the friendships and experience. Like you, I have a deep attachment for the FJR because I've been able to meet a whole new circle of great friends simply as a result of my choice of bikes.

Don't be a stranger and holler if you find yourself in the PNW.

I did have a couple of rides, and even one through Spain in May. I just never came round to putting up the RRs. But at the same time, I have been quite busy over the past year with a new job so it's kind'a limited my riding. But yes, I shall post ride reports with this R1 when I get the chance to go for rides in the future.

Thanks for the compliment. And yes you are right, the wife is not too happy about the seating position on this bike. Also the noise from the pipes and wind. It is LOUD! I'm missing the windscreen already.

Thanks Hudson. Agreed. For a while, it was the coolest thing for me. But the friendships that resulted were even better. I still love the bike and would not hesitate to buy another one as a stablemate to my R1.

I don't know when, if ever, I'll be back to the US. But if I do make it back, I will definitely drop you a line.

Thank you all for your support and compliments. For sure, I will have RRs in the future with this R1. In fact, the first ride is already planned for this Sunday, up into the mountains.

Have a nice week ahead.
