Hi everyone.
This is not a typical ride report. I'm not sure where to put this but I just wanted to share. I hope this is the right place for it. Mods, sorry if it's not.
It's been a while since I posted here. I have sold my FJR. I thought it would be easy, but when the day came to hand over the bike to it's new owner, I became very emotional. It was, after all, my first bike. So I thought I'd share some memories I had with it.
On January 16, 2010, I took delivery of this baby
It was quite a big decision for me, to want to own this bike. I had zero riding experience. I only knew how to ride bicycles at the time and I had this childhood dream of wanting to ride. I recall it was from watching 'Fast' Freddie Spencer clinch both the 250 and 500 GP back in the 80s that made the idea stick in my mind. Fast forward to 2010, and at age 38, I walked into the biggest superbike showroom in south east asia and pointed to the biggest, baddest bike on the floor and told the sales guy,"That one. I want that one." And so I became the proud owner of a new 2008 FJR1300.
I loved this bike to bits... even though I dropped it at the showroom, the very day I got it.
It took me to all kinds of places.
The nation's administrative centre, Putrajaya. This was the very next day, after taking it home.
On the west coast of the peninsula, with new found FJR friend, Griffin (also on this forum). Griffin's bike is on the left.
A popular picnic spot deep in the mountain range
A castle in the mountains about an hour from my house
... which had a horse stable behind it. That's my SO on the right. And the horse on the left
...as well as a Koi pond in its garden
It took me across the mountain range, where I discovered that deep in the forest, there was this resort..
...which was made famous for the wild elephants that roamed the area. There's nothing between me and this elephant. Just the grass.
The bike got me into trouble with the cops on more than one occasion
... but after offering him a chance to sit on my bike, all was well again
It took me to the east coast
As well as the southern most tip of mainland Asia
But I think what I liked most was that it got me and my wife closer. I loved having my wife with me on rides and I loved talking to her while we were on the bike (we used a pair of Sena SMH10).
Here's a good shot of my wife taking a pic using my DSLR as we rode around the Penang Island. You can see her in the side mirror
The other thing was that I got to meet people from all over the world. All the people I know on this forum, I would not have met had it not been for this bike. And I'm honored to know all of you. Plus, I did some photography work for a local bike tour company for the 3 years I owned the FJR. I rode with them on all their tours and documented each tour in pictures. Here are a handful.
Martin and friends from the UK
Volkswagen boys from Germany
The final day, and grand finale - 3 laps of the F1 circuit in Sepang
Emrys and gang from Australia
But the best acquaintance was with Dave.
Dave is the guy with the gold Busa
He had visited us so many times that he invited me up to his home in France to ride with him. And we've done this every year now. The first to the south of France, the second year to Croatia. And this past May, I went with him again to Spain (the pics are still in my disc - I've not done a RR yet on this one). Just a couple of pics from some of these rides:
Along the Adriatic coast in Croatia. Here I'm piloting the same gold Busa that used in the pic above. He shipped this bike back home to France, having bought it in Singapore. This pic, courtesy of my wife shooting one handed.
Andorra
The Pyrenees
It was a sad day for me when I had to hand the keys over to the new owner. My FJR was special to me. It had created so many special memories. These were some of the last pics I took of the bike. I had never really taken any posed shots of my FJR and since I was about to hand over the keys, I decided to pose her for some glamour shots.
Goodbye old friend. I shall never forget you, for you were my first.
Of course, I am not done with riding. Just over a month after handing her over to her new owner, I took delivery of this.
Her shoes
My shoes
And the place to do fancy footwork and some 'brake' dancing
We're still getting to know each other, so we'll need some protection
She's a feisty one.
This pic below was taken on her first ride into the mountains. The very same spot I took the FJR on her last ride.
And this was from the ride yesterday evening
The view where I stopped
And the ride back down
I haven't done any real long distance rides, and will probably not do very many of those. I bought this R1 specifically for track days. But I may occasionally go out and do a ride, maybe once or twice a year. When I do, I'll put up an RR, as usual.
As always, thanks for looking and have a great week ahead.
Best.
Nik.
