When Mark and his lovely bride were in the Pacific Northwet, I loaded the Canada and boarder states into my GPS.

Now when I try to load the Western US map back in the 550 the only map I can get is the Canadian map. And yes I do have life time maps from Garmin.

Thoughts?

Plug the GPS into the PC. Find the file gmapsupp.img on the Garmin and delete it. Then load the USA Map to the 550.

The 550 GPS is unable to store the entire North American Map using internal memory. You can store the entire North America map on a

a 4 gig SD card by plugging the SD card in a PC. Then SD plug it into the Garmin. I store a copy on two SD cards in case one craps out I have a backup.

Recently I upgraded to a 590LM and I am happy with that but it required a lot of re-learning and accepting change. The 590LM will hold all the North American map in internal storage but not by much. It supports a 32 gig card so I have a backup map on the 32 gig card plus 2150 songs. I like that!

With a 550, Jim's suggestion is the way to go IMHO...... the backup card is definitely a good idea. If it does crap out or you are missing a section of map, all the GPS has is a base map where you will no longer get turn by turn, secondary roads missing, etc., and most importantly, no pie POI's.
