It seems to me that you have two things telling you that you have lost power somewhere:

Fuel pump will not run

You have error code er-1 (no signals are received from the ECU)

Have you checked fuses as described by Fudgejerkin1188? I would just pull, inspect, clean and reseat each fuse in turn, just in case. Start with the simple stuff.

It's a bit too early to quit!

Good luck

Don

What are the chances that it's just the relay? Haven't a few had those things go out?? Don't the headlamps and the fuel pump use the same relay? If so, you could just switch them and see if the pump gets power.

fudgejerkin is talking about a fuse I can't locate on top of the starter relay,I have removed and cleaned every fuse in the fuse boxes .In the morning I get the er-1 code but in the afternoon it starts like nothing is wrong !

Did you ever take your tank off or lift it up? I did that once and when I put the harness' back on the tank I managed to flip the leads/harness'. She wouldn't start.

the tank has never been lifted,If I could find the fuel pump relay it might be worth it to just replace it or at least check the connections, should have bought the sevice manual

IMO, er-1 is by far your most significant issue, fix that first before chasing secondary problems. The chances of this error being a fuse is low unless it is related to the owner messing with the machine. If you have been into the air box or have done the Barbarian Mod please check the connector at the ECU. The Meter Assembly is saying that it is receiving no communications with the ECU. This could be a bad ECU, bad Meter assembly or an issue with the wiring between the two. There is a significant coupler between the ECU and the Meter Assembly that could be the cause.

3 years and the tank's never been up?

Shame-shame-shame, running on worn out spark plugs and not doing the TBS. :nono:

Put a cuke in it, howie......my tank was lifted only twice. Once in reno and once after I fell down. You don't need no stinkin' maintenance done on this POS. Just change the oil and the battery every once in a while(change your pumpkin oil at the same time as the battery change).

....and hopefully it's not just a battery..........................

I wish it was just the battery ,in my new service manual it does'nt get specific on what replace the er-1 code means a lot of different things need to be looked at .other people in this forum have had the er-1 problem but do not say what the remedy was for them

This post covers all the main possibilities for the er-1 code. It is directly from the Service Manual. The ECU 'talks'

to the Meter Assembly via serial communication; the er-1 code says that this communication is not happening.

IIRC, there has only been one or two confirmed bad ECUs and those may have been because of the owner messing with stuff. There was one other that sounded like a bad meter assembly but the OP never closed the thread. There have been a number of issues with the ECU connector, but most of those were related to Uh-Ho problems caused by mistakes when doing the Barbarian Jumper. There is a retainer clip that sometimes got forgotten or broken and sometimes pins didn't get locked and were pushed out. It may be worth it to simply unplug and replug the ECU connector.

Copy this: er-1 site:fjrforum.com then go to Google and paste it in the search bar. This will show all the history in the Forum about er-1.

Edit: One other thing comes to mind. Call any Yamaha dealer, give them your VIN and they will tell you if there are any open factory recalls. The one in particular you are interested in is the Ground Jumper recall. The ground jumpers (Spiders in Forum speak based on their shape) cause a wide range of failure symptoms.

My '06 had the same symptoms after sitting in the rain and salt air along the coast for 4 days. Starter turned it over like mad but no start-no pump sound and it threw a code 19- broken wire to the ECM..Cycling the ignition switch got the pump to hum and then the bike started instantly. Problem was with the small contacts in the ignition switch which supply juice to the ECM. I hosed half a can of contact cleaner -lube down the keyhole and the problem has not returned..Not sure how this could cause an er-1 code though, or why thumping the tank would help...

It's been a week in the shop still no diognosis ,I did go by and look at it ,it's in a million pieces, ecu hanging by the wires, which they said can cost a $1000.00 just for the ECU .Does that seem right?

Go look it up: Cyclepartswarehouse.com

Not encouraging. Your dealer is not giving me much of a warm and fuzzy feeling.

I predict a serious monetary ***-raping developing here.

Hope I'm wrong and the dealer is a square-shooter.
